Basic Function/Definition
The Rio Hondo Math Academy is designed to prepare middle and high school students for college level math courses through a variety of noncredit math courses. Math Academy Tutors serve as role models and mentors to students. They equip students with math concepts, techniques, strategies, attitudes, and the perseverance needed to successfully acquire new knowledge, solve problems, and complete academic tasks. Math Academy Tutors need to be well-versed in different math levels, always maintain a high level of professionalism and uphold academic integrity in their work with students.
Math Academy Tutors are distinguished from Tutor IIs in that the Math Academy Tutors are staff who provide needed assistance during and after class to enhance math performance of targeted middle and high school students.
Essential Duties
Examples of Duties:
  • Meet with students on a one-on-one or small-group basis to give learning assistance.; E
  • Help students with study strategies and techniques.; E
  • Demonstrate knowledge within the specific academic area to which assigned in to work with students.; E
  • Provides individualized tutoring sessions on basic skills and other academic course work.; E
  • Provides other instructional support services as assigned.; E

Minimum Qualifications/Education and Experience
Education and Experience:
  • Graduation from high school or GED AND
  • Currently enrolled in a community college or university as a full-time or part-time student, unless AA or BA degree(s) have already been earned.
  • If currently enrolled, must have and maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA, evidenced by college transcript.
  • Must have earned an “A” or “B” in math courses.
  • Prior experience as a tutor is preferred.

Any degree from a country other than the United States, including Canada and Great Britain, must be evaluated by an Evaluation Service prior to the closing date. Certification must be attached with copies of transcripts.
