Purpose of Job
The Cardiovascular Technologist is responsible for providing the Cardiologist surgical assistance, patient monitoring, and performing complete diagnostic requirements under the supervision of a cardiologist to manage the patient through the invasive procedure. The Cardiovascular Technologist will assist the Physician in the safety of the patient through monitoring and performing diagnostic testing. They will also work with the Physician during the procedure to provide the surgical table requirements and necessary supplies in the circulator role.
Job Functions
1. I n coordination with nursing staff, provide patient care through education, support and treatment. Carries out all functions in assisting the Cardiologist during the exam.
2. Is responsible for preparing the procedure table with all necessary supplies and a knowledge of all supplies available should they be needed during a procedure.
3. Positions and prepares the patient on the procedure table prior to the Cardiologist entering the room. Assists physicians in monitoring /circulator role.
4. Ensures that a Time Out is completed before beginning the procedure. Identifies patient with two identifiers.
5. Is competent in using sterile technique and ensures a safe and sterile environment for the patient.
6. Is able to communicate effectively with nursing staff and MDs.
7. Skilled at set up, rates and use of contrast injector.
8. Operates and assists Cardiologist in the use of the portable US system.
9. Operates patient monitoring system. Documents all needed aspects of the procedure. Maintains a safe patient environment and communicate with patient and responds immediately to patient needs.
10. Has an ability to multitask when required and perform with speed and accuracy.
11. Promptly reports all equipment problems to appropriate source. Maintains quality control requirements and understand basic trouble shooting for the equipment.
12. Understands the anatomy and physiology of the conduction system, and associated intra cardiac electrocardiographic signals.
13. Detects and responds to changing patient conditions, observing EKG, blood pressure and electrograms. Performs complete diagnostic and provocative pacing protocols under the direction of the physician. Differentiates basic and complex arrhythmias and assists in mapping.
14. In ensuring a safe environment for patients and staff, uses equipment per manufacturer and department guidelines, uses lifts and transfer equipment and maintains good radiation procedures.
15. Records, compiles and enters patient data accurately into electronic medical records and image retrieval system.
16. Ensures that all relevant patient information is communicated and verifies all images have appropriately transferred to the imaging storage and retrieval system at the end of procedure.
17. Other duties as assigned.
