The Research Assistant | Phlebotomist combines responsibilities in both Research Laboratory Phlebotomy and Research Assistant duties, including performing blood draws, specimen processing, patient preparation, sample labeling, and scheduling shipments, while also assisting Clinical Research Coordinators with Electronic Data Capture (EDC), administrative tasks, patient chart preparation, and maintaining treatment space cleanliness. Candidates must hold certification as Phlebotomy Technicians (CPT), demonstrate proficiency in computer skills, possess strong communication and interpersonal abilities, and maintain professionalism in the workplace.

Reports to: Senior Clinical Research Manager

Research Laboratory Phlebotomy Duties:

  • Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) to assist with blood draws and specimen processing following research study protocols.
  • Preparing patients before drawing blood, verifying patient information, and labeling blood samples properly per research study protocol.
  • Preparing specimens for transportation per protocol including labeling vials accurately, matching blood specimens and the correct paperwork to patients prior to shipment.
  • Scheduling shipment pickup with UPS and Fedex as needed.
  • Explaining blood draw procedures to patients and answering any questions about the process
  • Following all health and safety protocols and procedures to maintain sanitary work areas before and after each blood draw.
  • Gathering medical testing materials, including needles, sample vials, blood storage bags and test tubes.
  • Monitor inventory of all study related lab kits and responsible for ordering additional lab kits as needed.
  • Communicating with third party vendors and Sponsor to complete lab related queries.
  • Collaborate with the Clinical Research Coordinators (CRCs) to make sure all study lab manuals are the most updated version.
  • Keep all lab study supplies organized using a standardized method including all lab related excel spreadsheets.
  • Help nervous or frightened patients remain calm during blood draws
  • Collaborating with Clinical Research Coordinators (CRCs) in confirming appropriate lab draws per research protocol and following protocol instructions at all times
  • Monitoring and documenting temperature monitors for clinic drug stock and assisting with clinic medication inventory.
  • Assist with calling research patients for reminder of study appointments.

Research Assistant Duties:

  • Assist Clinical Research Coordinators (CRCs) with Electronic Data Capture (EDC) and resolving Queries using Sponsor database
  • Prep patient charts with the appropriate documents per Protocol prior to patient scheduled visits.
  • Assist Clinical Research Coordinators (CRCs) with quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) on patient charts prior to entering into Electronic Data Capture (EDC)
  • Filing and organizing regulatory and patient related documents. 
  • Sanitize and provide a cleanliness space for patients while rotating treatment. 
  • Assist Clinical Research Coordinators (CRCs) with Intraocular Pressure (IOP) after treatment.
  • Replenish stock of utilities in exam and treatment rooms.
  • Assist Clinical Research Coordinators (CRCs) with prepping for Monitoring Visits (MV)
  • Assist coordinating patients in clinic for work flow and assuring all procedures are completed following the Schedule of Activities (SOA) (Work-up and vitals, BCVA, Labs, ECG, All Images for visit specific, Exam, and Treatment).
  • Maintain and update training certifications in delegated clinical research trials.
  • Receive and confirm arrival of new shipment and stock products accordingly
  • Other study related tasks are subject to be required as the demands change.

Required Qualifications

  • Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) and proof of certification
  • Excellent computer skills and ability to learn new computer programs. Proficient knowledge of Excel, Word, Outlook.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills needed to interact professionally and effectively in the work environment, as well as to effectively document research procedures.
  • Ability to read, comprehend and discuss research materials.
  • Effective interpersonal skills. Ability to work with a variety of personnel within the research and clinic departments.
  • Courteous, respectful of co-workers and maintain a safe and collegiate workplace environment.
