Candidate will work within the EMR system supporting the providers as they interact with the patient. We are committed to creating an inclusive work environment that celebrates diversity.Candidates must be able to travel to various clinics to meet the needs of the patients and providers and support the clinic's hours (Monday - Friday, 8 am to 5:30 pm). Schedules are provided weekly and are based on the provider's clinic patient and surgery schedule. Responsibilities
  • Correctly summarizes and documents what the physician verbalizes during an examination, including but not limited to: proper charting of the examination, documenting additions to the chief complaint, assessment and recommendations for treatment (including justification of decisions reached when appropriate).
  • Knows required components of examination for appropriate CPT coding to ensure all elements are accurately completed and knows how to pull up images in the exam room prior to the visit. 
  • Understands Medicare and other common insurance requirements for quality reporting in order to help practice comply with payer requirements.
  • Observes the patient and the physician and assists when appropriate during the exam, including but not limited to: drawing up and preparing appropriate medication/syringes, securing the lid(s) open, and following directions in a medical emergency.
  • Maintains an awareness of the patient’s verbal and non-verbal communication when the physician is providing instructions as it may be necessary for the scribe/assistant to repeat information, provide written instructions, and/or hand out patient education materials for the patient to review at home.
  • Ensures the patient understands all instructions and all questions have been answered before the patient leaves the exam room. 
  • Accurately documents chart errors according to practice protocols.
  • Helps maintain the patient flow by seating patients into an empty exam room to prepare for physicians including ensuring appropriate electronic records are pulled up in the exam room. 
  • Alerts physician to patient-related forms that need completion, such as Driver’s License Form, Back to Work Form, etc. 
  • Guides patients to front desk after completion of exam and ensures proper follow-up appointments are communicated to the front desk to be made including set up of drug patient assistance program paperwork if necessary before the patient leaves.
  • Learns the personality and preferences of each physician, recognizing differences and abiding by them when working with that particular physician.
  • Becomes fluent in the exact exam requirements of each diagnosis and treatment. 
  • Accommodates the needs of the patient for the exam:
  • Monitors examination room and any physical limitations the patient may have.
  • Make sure the patient chair is down before the patient prepares to leave, the equipment is off, the slit lamp is out of the way, equipment is sanitized, etc.
  • Provides patients with their cane, handbag, coat, etc. to expedite patient flow when exiting the exam room.
  • Evaluates the condition of the examination room to ensure adequate supplies are in stock through the completion of this doctor’s clinic and in preparation for the team that follows. 
  • Notifies physicians of changes to the daily schedule, especially making them aware of the details of any emergency add ons. 
  • Facilitates communication between the physician and other staff members as helpful to minimize clinic flow disruptions.
  • Performs other tasks as required including helping as a technician, rooming assistant or clinic floater to assist with the clinic.
Qualifications EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Fluency in English, bilingual preferred.
  • Basic understanding of algebraic principles.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience in a medical office, preferably an ophthalmology office.
  • Completion of medical terminology and/or ophthalmic terminology courses.
  • Excellent spelling ability.

  • Training and understanding of HIPAA requirements and the importance of maintaining patient confidentiality.
  • Strong, professional interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated respect for staff and patients.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication.

  • Legible handwriting. 
PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
  • Must be able to walk and stand for the entire work shift.
  • Must be able to move frequently from standing and sitting depending on exam room configuration during clinic sessions.
  • Must be able to type or write legibly in a dimly-lit setting.
  • Must be able to hear softly spoken words.
  • Must be able to add support for elderly patients getting in and out of exam chairs.
