Resource Environmental Solutions LLC is Hiring a Stream Sciences Intern Near Richmond, VA

Overview

RES is currently accepting applications for a Stream Sciences Intern, based out of our Richmond, VA office. This internship typically runs from May to August, but the duration is negotiable based on your schedule. This is a full time position, that is you can expect our workweek to be of 40 hours, and you will be remunerated during this internship.

The mission: As the Stream Scientist Intern, you will work with stream scientist, design, and ecology personnel to perform all aspects of fieldwork and assist with data entry and compilation of technical reports.

You will learn about:

  • Stream mitigation in Virginia and Maryland
  • Stream restoration practices
  • Basics of fluvial geomorphology and how it applies to stream restoration
  • Riparian vegetation and mitigation plantings

You will learn how to:

  • Survey a stream with a laser level
  • Process geomorphic data
  • Assess stream bank erosion
  • Download and process data from stream gages and temperature loggers
  • Conduct vegetation assessments
  • Basics of wetland delineation

You will work under the supervision of a senior member of the Stream Scientist team, in a group of like-minded people who are all passionate about the earth. You will work with your supervisor to determine the skills you would like to develop and the activities you’d like to learn more about. The cumulation of your internship will be a presentation on what you learned to the stream scientist, design, and ecology staff.

What your day-to-day might look like?

Around 60% of your time, you will be in the field! You will be assisting with:

  • Stream mitigation monitoring and geomorphic surveys
  • Crediting assessments for TMDL and CWA404 projects
  • Site feasibility assessments
  • Stream gage and groundwater well installation
  • Vegetation assessments and tree surveys
  • Wetland delineations
  • Fish electroshocking

Please be advised that we perform these tasks come rain or come shine and working outside in harsh and adverse weather conditions (including both cold and hot environments) is part of the routine. You will also be walking long distances, bending, lifting heavy objects (up to 50 lbs), and performing other physical activities. Occasionally, some of our projects require extensive travel with overnight stays.

Around 40% of your time, you will be performing data entry, data processing, and technical writing based on your fieldwork. Superior writing, communication, and computer skills (MS Word, Excel, etc.) and attention to detail are paramount. Pieces you will assist with include:

  • Monitoring report development
  • Data entry for geomorphic surveys, vegetation assessments, and credit calculations
  • Graphing stream gage and temperature data

Qualifications

We would love to talk to you if you have many of the following:

  • Pursuing a degree in an environmental science field such as, but not limited to, ecology, wetland science, aquatic biology, botany, wildlife biology, fisheries, soils, hydrology, engineering, etc.
  • Data entry and analysis experience
  • Technical writing experience
  • A love for the outdoors!

What will make you astand out? 

  • Knowledge of fluvial geomorphology and stream ecology
  • Biological surveying experience
  • Plant identification skills
  • Experience using GPS units and ESRI products
  • Experience in stream geomorphic survey techniques
  • Understanding of CWA 404 and TMDL regulations
