Role Overview

Performs complex skilled human support work developing, implementing, and supervising childcare program, materials, activities, and procedures, motivating children to achieve maximum potential, preparing and maintaining records, files, and reports, and related work as required. Work is performed under the general direction of the Child Care Operations Manager and Office on Youth Director. Division supervision is exercised over volunteers, Teacher Assistants, Teachers, and Lead Teachers.

Role Description

  • Maintains children's files, as required by Virginia State Licensing, which includes immunization records, child's information, parent's information, authorized and non-authorized persons to pick up child, etc.
  • Maintains reports and records, including child's development, weekly time reports verifying times children were signed in and out, monthly fire drill evacuations, etc.
  • Ensures all daily licensing requirements are met (Ex.: gross/fine motor activities, snack, music, etc.).
  • Meets with parents/guardians as needed to address concerns and issues that arise.
  • Schedules training for staff; holds regular staff meetings; deals with issues that may arise; reviews bi-weekly timesheets; tracks volunteer community services hours.
  • Maintains weekly charges for each family; meets weekly with bookkeeper regarding accounts; sends messages to parents regarding delinquent accounts; keeps track of site income and expenses; accepts and records payments.
  • Schedules staff; sets up, coordinates, and attends field trips, including arranging transportation in partnership with the Child Care Operations Manager, accepting payments, setting times, etc.; schedules special events coinciding with holidays; schedules visitors to come onsite and speak to children regarding various topics; arranges and schedules fundraisers to offset costs of fieldtrips.
  • Orders and inventories snack foods; prepares snacks daily; serves snacks to children; cleans after snack, which includes sweeping, moving tables, washing dishes, mopping, sanitizing tables, etc.; travels to store to pick up snack foods, when needed.
  • Inventories and orders various arts and crafts supplies and educational and age-appropriate games and activities.
  • Executes fire drills, evacuation drills, and shelter in place drills.
  • Interacts with children on a daily basis, giving a sense of safety and security to the children; provides enriching environment for the children.
  • Provides an opportunity for the children to have quiet time to complete homework and receive help, as needed.
  • Administers medications, when needed; maintains and assembles items to complete first aid kit.
  • Provides training to all staff under their supervision to ensure their ability to fulfill their job duties, including, but not limited to site emergency preparedness and staff responsibilities.
  • Attend a minimum of 20 hours of yearly training and any additional training as requested.
  • Recommends policies for program improvement.
  • Coordinates shared space with Orange County Public Schools.
  • Performs related tasks as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of child care practices and techniques; thorough knowledge of children's developmental and social growth expectations and needs; general knowledge of health, safety, and first aid practices, methods, and techniques; skill in working with children; ability to develop plans and programs for individual development; ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior; ability to present material effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to communicate effectively and exchange important information with parents; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with parents, staff, students, and associates.

Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree with coursework in nursing, recreation, teaching, or related field with certifications and training as indicated below in the Special Requirements section, and considerable experience in a licensed child care setting; or an equivalent combination of education and experience as provided in the VA Department of Licensing regulations.

Special Requirements

  • Satisfactory results on a criminal history background, central registry check, and sex offender registry check are required.
  • Minimum age of 21 years old.
  • Completion of the Office on Youth Supervisor Training Book within 60 days of employment date.

Obtain the following certifications:

  • CPR and First Aid certification within 90 days of employment
  • Daily Health Observations or Health Screening certification within 90 days of employment
  • Medication Administration Training (MAT) within 6 months
  • Medication Administration Training for Diabetes (MAT-D) – MAT training must be completed first
  • Recognition of Child Abuse & Neglect training within 60 days of employment
  • Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
