Renewal Memory Partners is Hiring a Care Companion for VIP Client - Proactive Engagement I Upper East Side Near Manhattan, NY

Job Description:
We are currently seeking a compassionate and proactive Care Companion for our VIP client, a retired mathematician, and philanthropist. He has experienced moderate cognitive impairment for several years, which is progressing quickly to severe. Our client requires attentive care, engagement, and companionship.

Job Details:

  • Position: Care Companion
  • Schedule: 8 am to 4 pm or 9 am to 5 pm, seven days a week (potential for overnight shifts)
  • Preferred Candidate: Female

Client Background:
Client has been a prominent figure in various fields, and his cognitive impairment has led to unique care needs. He is currently battling lung cancer and receiving diverse treatments. Despite his health challenges, He remains physically active and engaged.

Client Interaction:

  • Client initially appears reserved but becomes more comfortable with interaction.
  • Affectionate and engaged with companionship.
  • Companionship and presence play a significant role in client’s activity and involvement.

Health Considerations:

  • Client is a smoker with lung cancer.
  • Physical well-being in terms of walking.
  • Assistance with ADLs (Activities of Daily Living) anticipated, with the RN overseeing care.

Requirements:

  • Proven experience in providing care to individuals with cognitive impairment.
  • Proactive and engaging approach to companionship.
  • Flexibility for potential overnight shifts.

Responsibilities:

  • Providing companionship to older adults and people with chronic health conditions in their homes (e.g., discussing current events, creating artwork, reviewing photo albums).
  • Providing compassionate, patient hands-on personal care support for ADLs, including bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and transfers.
  • Planning activities outside the home and accompanying clients to keep them engaged with the world (e.g., trips to museums, concerts, plays, or the park).
  • Escorting clients to doctors’ appointments.
  • Running errands for clients (e.g., grocery shopping, sundries).
  • Reminding clients to take their medications.
  • Doing light exercise with clients (e.g., helping with stretching routine).
  • Assisting clients in preparing meals.
  • Performing light housekeeping, such as dusting, tidying, and laundry.

Qualifications:
We welcome candidates with diverse backgrounds including the creative arts and healthcare fields. Our employment is selective. Strong candidates possess:

  • A valid HHA certificate in New York State
  • A passion for caring for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Prior experience working with this population is valued, but not required.
  • An accredited high school diploma, though we prefer candidates with college degrees or those currently attending colleges or graduate schools.
  • Deep empathy and patience.
  • Flexibility, reliability, and responsiveness.
  • Creativity and a positive, open-hearted approach.
  • Strong composure under pressure.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to build trust-based relationships with clients and their families.
