Relativity Space is Hiring a Loads and Dynamics Engineer II Near Long Beach, CA

Company Overview:

At Relativity Space, we have two audacious goals: to build the next great commercial launch company with Terran R and to become America's leading force in additive manufacturing innovation. Both contribute to our long-term vision of creating humanity’s industrial base on Mars, paving the way for interplanetary life to expand the possibilities of the human experience. This journey begins right here on Earth – where we design, build, and fly rockets to deliver customer payloads to orbit. Terran R, our medium-to-heavy lift reusable rocket, fulfills the growing demand for launch capacity, thanks to our iterative approach that accelerates design, testing, and development while minimizing costs. While our groundbreaking research and development in 3D printing pushes the boundaries of large-scale additive manufacturing.Your journey with us is more than just a job – it’s an opportunity to shape the future of aerospace technology, additive manufacturing, and the human experience alongside a community of passionate, creative individuals. Join us on this extraordinary journey, as we work together to transform our vision into reality.

Team:

The Integrated Performance department at Relativity Space is responsible for ensuring that our rockets will achieve our overall objectives and satisfy stringent customer and government requirements. Our department comprises teams responsible for Flight Sciences, including Aerodynamics, Thermal, Loads, and Dynamics; Integrated Structures Analysis; Guidance, Navigation, and Control & Vehicle Performance (GNCP); Systems Engineering; Mission Reliability; and Product Engineering. We architect and execute analysis, simulation, operations, and test projects for all of Relativity’s hardware and software teams in pursuit of mission success. Overall, this team is critical to the launch success of Terran R!

The Dynamic Environments team owns development of vibration, shock, and acoustic levels, dynamic loads for components, high speed data analysis, and ensuring that hardware is designed and tested to withstand or mitigate these environments. Responsibilities span the entire rocket and engines and require proactive interfacing with other teams in Flight Sciences, Stage Engineering, Avionics, Propulsion, Infrastructure, and Test. Technical work involves signal processing, code development, predictive analysis ranging from hand calcs through detailed computational models, and hands-on instrumentation and testing.

What you’ll do:

As a Dynamics Engineer, you will play a key role in supporting development of the upcoming Terran R vehicle, and re-thinking launch vehicle systems around large-scale 3D printing and more streamlined manufacture and test processes. You will work collaboratively with Flight Sciences, Stage Engineering, Additive, Propulsion, Avionics, and Test teams to develop processing and analysis tools on time and budget, while meeting our technical requirements. A high degree of autonomy along with an ability to prioritize work in our fast-paced environment is required.

Here are some examples of projects you could be working on:

  • Support dynamics analysis needs within Relativity, helping to disposition loads and dynamics issues across the company.
  • Architect Terran R dynamic systems like stage separation, payload fairing separation, and payload dynamic environmental conditioning in collaboration with peer technical teams.
  • Build, execute, and validate Coupled Loads Analyses (CLA) at the system and vehicle level, including relevant tool development and automation.
  • Support design engineers in the successful application of vehicle and component loads to drive and achieve system and component requirements.
  • Develop and execute tests to support dynamic systems development and qualification, including hands-on work like test article integration, instrumentation setup, data processing, and model validation.

To be successful in this role, you should be self-motivated, eager to learn, adaptable, and able to deliver in a fast-paced, integrated vehicle program. You should also be able to resolve ambiguity and drive tasks to completion. Ideally, you have some direct experience with dynamics, vibration, shock, or acoustics, as well as a proven track record completing projects successfully as part of a technical team.

This position is ideal for engineers looking to cultivate subject matter expertise and make a direct impact on a variety of mission-critical systems and processes. The work involved with this role carries a broad influence, potentially affecting engine and vehicle structures, components, fluid systems, ground infrastructure, data analysis and software tools, instrumentation, modeling, and testing.

What you need to know:

  • An undergraduate degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, Applied Math or Physics, or a related field and 3 years relevant experience
  • Fundamental knowledge of engineering scripting languages like MATLAB and Python
  • Experience solving structural dynamics or vibration response problems
  • Signal processing, time and frequency domain analyses, statistical analysis
  • Familiarity with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) fundamentals and applications including modeling for Loads and model reduction techniques, and with dynamic analysis software like Nastran
  • Familiarity with Coupled Loads Analysis (CLA)

Nice to haves but not required:

  • A graduate degree (MS/PhD) in engineering or related field and 5 years relevant experience
  • Hands-on experience with dynamics testing, instrumentation, and data analysis
  • Experience in an analysis role on an integrated vehicle program
  • Familiarity with liquid rocket engine architectures, launch vehicle structural and/or fluid systems, aircraft or rocket aerodynamics
  • Familiarity with Multi-Body Dynamics (MBD) analysis
  • Experience with component and/or integrated vehicle modal test including pretest predictions and post-test correlation

Relativity Space offers competitive salary and equity, a generous vacation policy, an annual L&D stipend and more!

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.
