Description

  • Reviews and follows requests for tests and procedures prescribed by physicians.
    • Draws and processes specimens promptly and in compliance with established procedure.
    • Identifies and labels specimens.
    • Provides care appropriate for the neonate and the pediatric, adolescent, and geriatric patients served based on demonstrated knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span.
  • Specimen Collection and Processing.
    • Exhibits a thorough understanding of patient comfort and minimize the discomfort of venipuncture.
    • Knows the proper containers and requirements for each test requested or know where to locate the information.
    • Follows laboratory procedures for labeling specimens for testing.
    • Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.
    • Completes work conformed to standards of performance and specification or position (neatness, accuracy, volume, speed).
  • Clerical Duties
    • Completes laboratory charges in a timely manner.
    • Processes patients in a timely manner as they come in; informs technologist of the test required.
    • Helps maintain current files for all laboratory testing.
    • Assists in answering the telephones in the department.
    • Makes sure all reports are delivered before leaving after shift ends.
    • Checks the daily testing sent out to referral lab.
    • Keeps inventory supplies ordered from the referral laboratory.
  • Special Projects
    • Completes work conformed to standards of performance and specifications or position (neatness, accuracy, volume, speed).
    • Willing to accept additional responsibilities as requested by supervisory personnel.
    • Assists in reagent and supply inventory, restocks reagents and supplies as needed, and maintains assigned areas in a clean and orderly manner. Notifies appropriate personnel when supplies are at a reorder point.
    • Takes initiative. Offers aid and always available to help others.
  • Interpersonal and Professional skills:
    • Promotes public relations for the clinical laboratory by maintaining a professional image and conduct in interactions with other health care professionals.
    • Participates in the ongoing function of the laboratory diligently, displaying persistence in obtaining an acceptable outcome.
    • Uses the proper channel to introduce problems and suggestions.
    • Treats everyone with courtesy and respect.
    • Special projects are submitted to the Laboratory Director at requested time.

Requirements

  • Education: High School graduate or GED (some college preferred). 
  • Personal Job-Related Skills: The employee in this position will be required to maintain proficiency in some medical terminology, telephone communication skills, clerical work and phlebotomy skills.
  • Licensure, Registry or Certification: Phlebotomy registered (ASPT, ASCP, or other accepted certifying agencies) or equivalent is preferred, or registry eligible.
  • Experience: Prior Work Experience: One year in a medical laboratory preferred but not required.
  • Physical and Mental Requirements: Duties of the position require moderate periods of sitting, standing, and lifting up to 30pounds. She or he will be required to demonstrate competencies in the care and/or service to our patients/customers of all ages. Understands and follows oral and written instructions/directions.
