Red Ventures is Hiring an Energy Editor | CNET Near Louisville, KY

CNET is looking for a skilled content editor to join our energy team and guide readers through their decision journey on a variety of topics including residential solar, electrical vehicles, and power-saving tips.
CNET is a premium source for news and advice, ranging from technology to culture, personal finance, health and more. This energy editor role will focus on planning, story-boarding, writing and editing work that break down and explain complicated energy topics with a reader-first approach.
We are looking for someone with experience in different content types. Whether that's in the research phase such as news, trends, explainers and guides or closer to purchase with a review or best list, we are seeking someone who can demystify jargon-heavy energy topics through the lens of affordability and accessibility for the consumer.
Stories will be fact-based and well-sourced, with an unbiased voice, and written for a broad national audience. You'll edit a team of staff writers and freelancers and collaborate with SEO analysts. The energy editor will be responsible for identifying, researching and developing story ideas on a variety of energy topics. Energy-related topics include but are not limited to: Residential solar; community solar, battery storage; virtual power plants; EVs; electric vehicle charging and infrastructure; deregulated energy; HVAC; heat pumps; generators; thermostats; portable power stations; and energy savings tips.
The right candidate is passionate about energy topics and will be heavily involved in the editorial coverage stemming from CNET's Testing Labs of energy products (i.e. solar panels, batteries).
*This role is in a bargaining unit represented by a labor union, the Writers Guild of America, East.
Location:
  • Louisville, KY preferred a hybrid schedule (two days per week in office expectation).
  • Open to remote candidates with quarterly visits to CNET testing lab in Louisville, KY.
What You'll Do:
  • Writing, editing and strategizing content.
  • Develop methodologies for product reviews, service providers, best lists, and buying guides.
  • Observe live testing of energy products and translate tech jargon for the consumer.
  • Coach other writers and junior editors
  • Collaborate with other cross functional team members
  • Update existing stories to optimize audience reach
  • Lead impactful projects and initiatives
What We're Looking For:
  • 3 year experience with professional editing and writing
  • Four year degree in journalism, related field or equivalent experience
  • Energy knowledge and experience preferred but not required
  • Ability to perform strategic edits and copy edits that meet CNET brand guidelines.
  • Writing experience with reader-first approach
  • Experience seeking, vetting and interviewing high-profile industry experts
  • Experience coaching other writers
  • Some SEO knowledge (and how it intersects with content planning) preferred
  • Top-notch reporting and sourcing skills
  • Adept at quickly going in-depth on a new topic, while being able to explain complicated concepts in a way that anyone can understand
  • Adaptable to quickly changing dynamics and an ability to think on your feet
  • Self-motivated and comfortable working independently
  • A team player who can collaborate with and take direction from others
Compensation
  • Cash Compensation Range: $70,000-85,000*
    *Note actual salary is based on geographic location, qualifications, and experience.
