Red Rocks Community College is Hiring a Faculty - Engineering / Engineering Graphics Technology (164-Day) Near Lakewood, CO

Summary of Position

Red Rocks Community College seeks applications for a full-time faculty position to join our Engineering and Engineering Graphics Technology Departments. This is a full-time, 164-day academic year appointment that is focused around the 16.5-week Fall semester (August to December) and 16.5-week Spring semesters (January to May). The position begins in August 2024, but an earlier start is negotiable. The successful candidate will fulfill the teaching, professional development, and service obligations of full-time faculty in the Engineering and Engineering Graphics Technology departments at the College in accordance with the philosophy, policies, and procedures of the Colorado Community College System and Red Rocks Community College. A faculty assignment is comprised of two parts, one being the predominant duties as a teacher, which may include program coordination/development and the other is professional development and service obligations.

Essential Responsibilities

Instruction: Teach day, evening, or weekend courses and/or teach in any modality including in-person classroom-based courses, hybrid, remote, hyflex, concurrent, or online, ensuring that all courses meet the approved course outcomes and outlines. Instruction duties and responsibilities center on teaching excellence, which can include:

  • Learning and applying culturally responsive education and inclusive learning environments into classroom instruction and curriculum.
  • Demonstrating equity and inclusion skills that are measurable, student-focused, and support equity in achieving learning outcomes.
  • Active student engagement that empowers learners to think critically and achieve academic, professional, and personal goals.
  • Robust instructional content that is thought-provoking, current, and relevant.
  • Meaningful assessment and timely feedback related to student progress in achieving learning outcomes.
  • Continuous improvement of teaching and learning through evidence-based practices, reflection, innovation, and collaboration; and other College priorities.
Service: Service includes fulfilling the mission and goals of the College outside of the classroom. These may include but are not limited to:
  • Departmental service, including curriculum coordination and development.
  • Advising and outreach.
  • Administrative assignments and committee work at a campus- level, college, or System-wide.
  • Sponsoring and participating in student activities or community service events related to the College and tied to personal professional goals and job responsibilities.
Professional development activities are a part of service. Activities include:
  • Continuous improvement in teaching.
  • Best practices in higher education as related to college initiatives.
  • Maintaining expertise in the field.
  • Personal enrichment in higher education structure or leadership.
  • Professional Development: A commitment to ongoing professional development, including staying current with developments in the field, and participating in training opportunities, is important for maintaining excellence in teaching and mentoring.
Additional activities may include serving as the College representative on a local board or commission, making community or professional presentations, serving as a liaison to local schools, or serving as an elected or appointed member of local boards as a representative of the College.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree in one of the related degrees: Engineering, Physics, or Applied Mathematics from an accredited institution.
  • Fifteen (15) semester credit hours teaching experience.
  • Experience in at least one of the following: curriculum development, supervision, instruction, evaluation, or academic advising.
Preferred Qualifications:Experience working in diverse communities and supporting the success of individuals from racial, ethnic, and gender backgrounds that are underrepresented. A master’s or Ph.D. in Engineering from an academic institution accredited by ABET. One or more years of industry engineering experience. One semester of teaching Engineering Design to community college students. Teaching or experience in high school STEM programming. Demonstrated leadership experience and skills.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Ability to work from campus (primarily our Lakewood campus with occasional hours at the Arvada campus).Demonstrated ability to teach students using traditional and alternative methods of instruction. Demonstrated ability to integrate technology into the classroom where appropriate. Commitment to excellent teaching and a learner-centered philosophy. Demonstrated ability in Programming Languages, such as Arduino, Python, JavaScript, and/or Matlab. Demonstrated CAD Experience: Solidworks, Autodesk, Tinkercad, OnShape. Demonstrated Professional Engineering Communication: Project Management, Engineering Design Reports, and professional presentations. Strong interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills.
Physical and Cognitive Demands: The following are some of the physical and cognitive demands commonly associated with this position:
  • Constantly uses a computer and routinely uses standard office equipment including phones, copiers, etc.
  • Cognitive demands include comparing, copying, computing, compiling, analyzing, coordinating, synthesizing, negotiating, communicating, instructing, and interpersonal skills.
  • The person in this position constantly communicates with internal and external constituents and students. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
  • Occasionally moves, positions, and transports classroom and office equipment and supplies weighing up to 10 lbs.

Department Information: The mission of the RRCC Engineering department is to prepare diverse students for successful transfer to engineering degrees at colleges and universities across the state of Colorado. RRCC was the first community college in Colorado to create an articulation with the Colorado School of Mines (Mines). Building on over 20 years of transfer, in Fall 2022 RRCC and Mines launched the Mines Academy at Red Rocks to offer diverse students competitive opportunities to enter Mines upon completion of the Mines Academy. RRCC offers an Associates of Engineering (AES) degree. In addition to Mines, RRCC engineering students are competitive in transferring to University of Colorado (Denver and Boulder) as well as Metro State University of Denver. We continue to work with other institutions such as University of Minnesota – Mankato (Iron Range Engineering Bell) to build a vigorous cadre Engineering transfer tracks and agreements.
Work Environment and Typical Work Schedule: Work is performed in a classroom setting conducting lectures, or in an office setting meeting with students, colleagues and preparing materials. Must be able to teach day, evening and/or weekend classes at the Lakewood campus or satellite campus in Arvada. Attendance at various off campus events and some travel may be required.

Starting Salary:Starting salary is determined by education and experience in accordance with our compensation plan.

Time Off

Sick Leave: Sick leave is for the purpose of providing protection of income to eligible employees to address their physical or mental wellbeing.

Accrual: Benefit-eligible Faculty shall accrue ten (10) hours of sick leave per working month of their faculty contract (e.g. 9, 10, 11 or 12 month contracts), prorated according to the percent of employment. The total annual accrual allowed will be credited to faculty at the beginning of the contract term. Additional assignments and overloads are not considered in the determination of sick leave accrual.
Faculty Personal Leave: A maximum of sixteen (16) hours per year of the employee’s sick leave may be granted to benefit-eligible Faculty for personal reasons (faculty personal leave). Faculty may carry over up to sixteen (16) hours of faculty personal leave from year-to-year. No more than thirty-two (32) hours of faculty personal leave may be used in any year and no more than sixteen (16) hours of faculty personal leave may be used in any week.
