How You Will Contribute
The Associate Scientific Director is a managerial role within the organization and leads one or more scientific accounts. Provides high-quality editorial review and functions as a scientific and therapeutic expert for assigned project teams. Defines the desired standards for the development of original, accurate, high-quality content within project specifications, timelines, and budgets. Identifies training needs within the scientific team, develops plans to address them, and oversees implementation of such plans. Also helps mentor medical writing staff with their projects and assists in their professional development. Provides support for business development and participates in presentations for existing clients and for business development.
Essential Functions:
  • Sets the standards for assigned team, driving continuous improvement related to quality of deliverables and client/stakeholder interactions
  • Regularly evaluates internal processes related to content development and provides suggestions for improvement to SVP/VP Scientific Services and Strategy and Scientific/Associate Scientific Directors for discussion and potential process refinement
  • Meets the standards of quality for the outputs of the assigned scientific team
  • Ensure that all direct reports have current and meaningful objectives that are regularly reviewed to ensure their personal development
  • Remains current on Good Publication Practices and ensures internal and external compliance
  • Identifies scientific teams' training needs, coordinates with Business Unit lead and SVP/VP Scientific Services and Strategy to develop plans to address, and oversees implementation of such plans
  • Leads medical writers (both in-house and freelance) to develop clear, accurate content that meets objectives
  • Working with SVP/VP Scientific Services and Strategy, provides medical direction and develops strategy for our clients' medical/scientific communications programs
  • Interacts with external thought leaders and faculty as well as client colleagues and clinical leads
  • Cultivates expertise in assigned therapeutic areas
  • Works closely with Client Services to ensure projects are properly resourced, completed in a timely manner, meet timelines, and stay within budget
  • Oversees medical writer recruitment for assigned account(s) in collaboration with Business Unit Lead
  • Works with Client Services' counterpart and SVP/VP Scientific Services and Strategy to identify opportunities for account growth and participates in client discussions as required
  • Demonstrates ability to balance multiple projects across multiple accounts/assets
  • Leads content-focused client and external stakeholder calls
  • Works with Business Unit lead to ensure objectives of business unit are met, including financial targets for assigned accounts
  • Assists new/junior writers with content development activities and serves as a resource for questions
  • Continuously complies with Red Nucleus and client standard editorial procedures, including ethical standards
  • Represents the company at client meetings (eg, advisory boards, speaker-training meetings, business development initiatives) in a professional manner
About You
  • PhD in a biomedical science/PharmD/MD (or local equivalent) preferred
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in medical communications as a medical writer
  • Demonstrated experience mentoring junior writers
  • Knowledge of scientific and regulatory requirements applicable to all phases of clinical studies, study protocols, and reports
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, clinical data interpretation skills, strong interpersonal and leadership skills, ability to plan/organize and multitask
  • Demonstrated skills to guide and work with a team, including remote management
  • Familiar with current GPP and ICMJE guidelines
  • CMPP preferred
  • Ability to travel (<10%)
