State of South Carolina is Hiring a Highway Maintenance Worker II Medium Equipment Operator (61034241) Near Columbia, SC

Job Responsibilities

At Lexington Maintenance, operates the Injection patcher and large roller working with crew in paving and patching. Cleans out holes and adds tack to secure base. Places asphalt and tamp for a good seal. Driveways are leveled and rolled and left neat. Fills in washouts with sand and rock using the truck and shovel. Operates 5-yard dump truck hauling materials to job site or stockpile on the yard. Preventive maintenance program will be followed as required. Performs traffic control flagging operations to control flow of traffic to protect workers, general public and equipment. Works with crew to install driveways by helping to load pipe, rock and cement onto the truck. Assists to operates a front-end loader to haul to job site. Cuts site areas by hand using axe, chain saw, and sling blade. Cuts trees that are blocking the view or dead and hazardous to the public. Trims overhanging limbs on the roadway. Cleans up debris off the roadway. Operates medium to heavy equipment during emergencies and/or hazardous weather.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

Six (6) months of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required upon entry to the position. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.

Additional Comments

May be required to work overtime, nighttime, and/or weekends during hazardous weather or emergencies.
