Permanent - Full-time, 37 hours per week
Grade RG8b (scp 39 – 42) £42,821 - £45,859

We carry out a full range of domestic, recycling and commercial waste collection services to a high standard endeavouring to reduce landfill and maximize recycling across the services.

Due to the expansion of our services, we are looking for an experienced Assistant Waste Services Manager to join our dynamic and enthusiastic team to help deliver the highest level of customer services to out customers, in line with the national codes of practice, statutory requirements and Council policy and strategy

About the role
The main purpose of the role is to assist the operations, activities and supervision of staff, while exercising a working knowledge of household and commercial waste collections:

  • To assist the Waste Services Manager in the daily operation of efficient and cost-effective Waste Operations Service.
  • To assist in the planning and implementation of the major waste service changes which will emerge from the Government’s Resource and Waste Strategy
  • To ensure the delivery of a high quality, responsive and customer focussed waste/recycling collection service within Reading.
  • Responsible for the direct management of Waste Operations Supervisors, and Recycling & Enforcement Team Leader and assist them in the supervision of staff within the service in accordance with Council policies.
  • Assist with workforce development, developing training for approx. 80 operatives and to upskill and motivate staff.
  • To have extensive experience in the enforcement of environmental crimes across the borough including (but not limited to), fly-tipping, littering and commercial waste enforcement.

About you

  • Experience in the management of staff within a Waste related service
  • Successful attainment of or to be working towards a recognised Waste Industry training qualification such as Practical Waste Management (CIWM) or WAMITAB Level 3 Certificate in Waste and Resource Management.
  • A thorough understanding of relevant legislation covering Environmental Services including enforcement.
  • A thorough understanding of the Resource and Waste Strategy and its implications for the Waste Service.
  • A thorough understanding of relevant Health & Safety (at work) legislation.
  • Thorough understanding of relevant contractual issues.
