QUALIFICATIONS: Meet all requirements for one of the following levels of interpreters:
Interpreter /Aide-Must meet the requirements for a classroom aide and have at
least minimal ability to communicate in signs.
Certified Interpreter-Must have a high school diploma and hold certification
in interpreting through on of the following:
• Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment at a Level 3.5, or
• La. Commission for the Deaf at a Level 2 (Acceptance will be
determined on an individual basis for those transferring with
certification from another state)
REPORTS TO: Assigned Special Education Supervisor
JOB GOAL: To facilitate communication among deaf students and their hearing peers, the
classroom teacher, and other personnel in the school system
TERM: Nine (9) months
SALARY: Interpreter Salary Schedule
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. To interpret expressively and receptively for deaf students including interpretations for
presentations/lectures, films, videos, and cassette tapes
2. To instruct students, staff, and faculty on the use of an interpreter within a mainstream setting; assist in determining seating arrangements in order to see the teacher, interpreter, and visual aids and supplemental teaching materials
3. To monitor student’s progress in the mainstream educational program and report progress to the teacher
4. To collect and record pertinent data for teacher’s review
5. To study, review, and become familiar with the lessons and concepts of the various educational subjects; learn technical sign vocabulary specific to each class provide student (s) with technical sign vocabulary specific to each class
6. To provide assistance in clarifying information; encourage student participation in class
discussions; refer discipline problems to the teacher for modification
7. To interpret for a variety of school events and activities; substitute for absent interpreters as needed; assist in the transport of elementary students to and room classes
8. To provide input at the IEP conference concerning classroom strategies that are best suited for the individual deaf student
9. To perform other duties as assigned by the Rapides Parish Special Education Supervisor
10. Adhere to all Rapides Parish School Board policies, procedures, and regulations
