Job Description
The Santa Ana College School of Continuing Education at the Centennial Education Center wishes to develop a pool of qualified applicants for part-time and substitute teaching opportunities in this discipline.
ResponsibilitiesTeach all assigned classes, which may include evening or off-campus assignments unless excused according to Board Policy provisions. Maintain accurate records of student enrollment, attendance, and academic progress. Assist in maintaining course outline for each assigned course. Be familiar with and observe the administrative regulations as they appear in the Faculty Handbook (flex calendar obligations, course overviews, etc.). Participate in department committees and activities. Will teach a variety of courses/levels within the discipline/area of study.
Job Qualifications
RequirementsMinimum Qualifications (Applicants must meet one of the following):Education and/or experience in each discipline:
  • English as a Second Language: Possess from an accredited institution a bachelor's degree in teaching English as a second language, or teaching English to speakers of other languages, OR a bachelor's degree in education, English, linguistics, applied linguistics, any foreign language, composition, bilingual/bicultural studies, reading, or speech; and a certificate in teaching English as a second language, which may be completed concurrently during the first year of employment as a non-credit instructor, OR a bachelor's degree with any of the majors specified in the above; and one year of experience teaching ESL in an accredited institution; and a certificate in teaching English as a second language, which may be completed concurrently during the first two years of employment as a noncredit instructor.
  • High School Subjects/GED/Adult Basic Education: possess from an accredited institution a bachelor's degree in any social science, humanities, mathematics, or natural science discipline or in liberal studies as appropriate for the course.
  • Parent Education (Effective Parenting): possess from an accredited institution a bachelor's degree in child development, early childhood education, human development, family and consumer studies with a specialization in child development or early childhood education, educational psychology with a specialization in child development, elementary education, psychology, or family life studies; and two years of professional experience in early childhood programs or parenting education.
  • Health and Safety (Substance Abuse): a bachelor's degree in health science, health education, biology, nursing, dietetics, or nutrition or an associate degree in any of those subjects and four years of professional experience related to the subject of the course taught.
  • Vocational Business Skills (Office Applications): VBUS - Accounting for Non-Accountants: a bachelor's degree and two years of occupational experience related to the subject of the course taught (office applications); OR associates degree and six years of occupational experience related to the subject of the course taught (office applications); or possession of a full-time, clear California Designated Subjects Adult Education Teaching Credential authorizing instruction in the subject matter, OR
  • Possess a valid California Community College credential authorizing service in the discipline, OR
  • The equivalent (applicants who do not meet the above minimum qualifications must complete the Equivalencies Section in the application form and provide conclusive evidence of such).
Desirable Qualifications
  • Experience in teaching students from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds and widely varying levels of proficiency preferred.
  • A working knowledge of and experience with student learning outcomes and assessment.

Based upon the information presented on the application materials, a limited number of candidates with qualifications most pertinent to the position will be invited to participate in the selection process, which may include a written test and oral interview. Meeting the minimum requirements of the position does not guarantee advancement in the selection process. Candidate qualifications will be assessed to determine those who meet and exceed requirements and are deemed most competitive amongst the applicant pool to proceed. InterviewApplicants selected for an interview may be required to take additional tests or assessments and will be notified of such prior to the date of the interview. During the oral session, those selected for interviews, in addition to the above, may be evaluated on the following factors:

  • Writing skills/demonstration

Foreign Transcripts: Education completed outside of the United States must be deemed equivalent to that gained in the conventional/accredited United States education programs to be considered for the satisfaction of minimum qualifications. Foreign transcripts must be translated and evaluated by the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES), a United States based credentials evaluation service. Conditions of Employment Selected candidate(s) is required to complete the following prior to employment as part of the onboarding process:
  • Submit official transcripts
  • Present original documents for proof of eligibility to work in the United States (by in-person appointment in Human Resources)
  • Provide a certificate of Tuberculosis Exam
  • Fingerprints (by a Live Scan Agency at the candidate's expense and clearance must be received prior to first day of employment)
