The Party Chief Surveyor is responsible for managing a survey crew performing boundary, topography, right of way, and construction surveys for public and private clients.

Job Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Calculates the lines and grades.
  • Right of way topography monthly to ensure quantities of materials.
  • Maintains and verifies GPS machine controls.
  • Works closely with superintendent to supervise and schedule 1-3 crews on multiple projects.
  • Provides work control lines and elevations that are required for accurate measurement and correct installation of materials by crafts, i.e., forms for concrete pours, anchor bolts, piping hangers and supports, etc.
  • Provides checking of as-built conditions that require the use of surveying techniques.
  • Provides topographic and cross-section surveys as required for planning and payment quantities. Provide quantity calculations as required.
  • Prepares documentation of surveying activities.
  • Maintains condition and adjustment of surveying equipment.
  • Supervises Surveying Technician and Surveying Trainee personnel.
  • Coordinates surveying activities with the assigned engineer to meet the construction requirements.
  • Regular attendance and punctuality at the workplace is required.
  • Must have knowledge of professional surveying practices and procedures; state and federal laws affecting land surveying and boundaries.
  • Must be proficient with the operation and maintenance of total stations, GPS and electronic levels, knowledge of Leica equipment a plus.
  • Must be proficient with electronic data collection systems and processes; must be able to download and process data files.
  • Thoroughly inspects and checks deliverables for accuracy and correctness; Deliverables includes field note sheets, electronic data collection files, and computation sheets.
  • Provides coordination and serves as Lead for survey crew personnel.

Experience and Education

  • 5 years’ experience in a senior surveyor/party chief role within the construction industry.
  • Field supervision experience is strongly preferred.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.
  • Proficient with desktop drafting software.
  • Excellent communication skills.

Physical Requirements

The Surveyor while performing the essential functions of this job is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, lift above their head, and talk or hear. The Surveyor is occasionally required to kneel, crouch or stoop, climb ladders, bend at the waist, squat, and crawl in tight or confined spaces to perform the essential functions . The Surveyor will occasionally lift, move or push up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and color vision. Ascending and descending ladders or stairs is required, and movement on uneven terrain is frequently required to carry out essential duties. Driving of a vehicle is required.

This position is exposed to high temperatures; cool/cold temperatures; and loud noises. Work in the construction area poses significantly greater risk due to moving construction equipment and active construction zones with trip and fall hazards. The office environment is a low to medium risk area. Computers and phones are constantly in use.
