Job Summary:

Our observer will work under the direction of the Engineer to protect the railroad infrastructure and may be assigned additional responsibilities as required. The observer acts as representatives of the Company and is expected to establish a professional business relationship with contractors, suppliers, Railroad Representatives, vendors, other stakeholders, and Company personnel.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Observe utility installations on railroad property
  • Support 3rd-party trenchless construction near live railroad tracks
  • Document pre and post-construction site conditions, materials, layout, and daily construction activities
  • Maintain active communication with on and off-site personnel
  • Document work according to approved plans
  • Attend railroad and contractor daily briefings, discuss project requirements and engineering information
  • Submit accurate daily reports using a tablet
  • Escalate noncompliance to management/engineers for review
  • Travel 100% of the time
  • Other duties as assigned or required to meet business needs.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Minimum 3 years of field experience in utility construction projects, focusing on trenchless technology (HDD, Jack and Bore/Auger Bore, Micro-Tunnel Boring, Pipe Ramming), OR 3 years of Railroad management experience
  • Extensive knowledge of municipal, communications, and energy utility construction with expertise in trenchless technology
  • Proficient in interpreting engineering drawings, specifications, and contract documents, and capable of identifying and rectifying construction deficiencies
  • Familiarity with geotechnical fundamentals, including soil identification, backfill, and compaction practices
  • Full understanding of temporary soil retaining shoring systems
  • Strong understanding of construction practices, methods, and equipment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Willingness to travel 100% of the time for extended periods
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, work in all weather conditions and on uneven ground, and stand/walk for extended periods
  • Availability for on-call duty and flexible working hours
  • Railroad construction experience is preferred, but not required
