GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES: Responsible for performing Nuclear Medicine and PET/CT procedures.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports to Center Manager, monthly QC reporting reviewed with Lead Technologist

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Coordinate and participate in a variety of technical procedures to include in vivo and in vitro studies; operate radiation detection and measurement instrumentation including stationary imaging devices, scintillation gamma and apparatus for in vitro counting.
  • Calibrate and draw up radiopharmaceutical materials for administration to patients; formulate radiopharmaceutical materials from pre-prepared kits. Calibrate instruments and review calibration data to detect trends indicating instrument malfunction. Calculate data to include results of patient studies and radioactive decay.
  • Evaluate recorded images for technical quality.
  • Process computerized image data to include function curves and reconstructed SPECT and PET/CT images.
  • Assume care for physical and psychological needs of patient of all ages during an examination.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies in assigned area; prepare and maintain records concerning radiopharmaceutical receiving, dispensing and disposal activities. Maintain records of order, including therapy procedures, receipt and disposal of all radioactive material in the department.
  • Provide instruction and technical guidance to radiologic technology students or other advanced imaging techs; assist in training new employees.
  • Request and coordinate all necessary patient information including medical chart, charge slips for all exams.
  • Perform quality assurance procedures on the equipment on a daily basis including daily/weekly surveys and wipe testing procedures as required.
  • Monitor Nuclear Medicine Department with portable survey meter for possible contamination.
  • Ensure compliance with the radioactive materials licensure requirements.
  • To include other duties deemed necessary by Center Manager.

The job holder must demonstrate current competencies applicable to the job position.

EDUCATION: Graduate of an AMA approved school of nuclear medicine technology.

EXPERIENCE: Minimum of one year in nuclear medicine preferred. Completion of 16 hours of training in PET/CT, as required by the State of Florida.

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSURE: Licensed by State of Florida and ARRT (N) or NMTCB (CNMT) certification. BLS Certification.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Nuclear medicine technology technical principles and procedures.
  • Quality care standards for nuclear medicine.
  • Anatomy (cross-sectional) and physiology.
  • Radiation safety and protection requirements for staff, patients and visitors.
  • IV placement and management skills.
  • Ability to use computer and network systems for processing and submitting images for interpretation by radiologist.
  • Emergency response: knowledge of AED function, crash cart location and oxygen tank usage. Ability to respond to allergic reactions or untoward medical event with calm demeanor and proficiency.

ABILITIES:

  • Ability to work in a cooperative nature within and outside department with staff, patients and families.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to explain procedures clearly and simply to patients.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS: Requires full body motion. Must be able to lift/carry/move items weighing up to 50 pounds. Requires positioning of patients. Requires 20/20 correctable vision.

ENVIRONMENTAL/WORKING CONDITIONS: Medical office, exam and treatment rooms. Exposure to radiation and communicable diseases. Work location may be variable.
