Description

Position Purpose:
Provide guidance and support to a cohort team of teachers and 9th grade students.
Formal Education: High School diploma. Candidates with college credit in education and counseling preferred.
Experience: Experience working with adolescents in a support or supervisory capacity.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
 Knowledge of issues impacting teenagers and school performance.
 Applicants need to have the ability to communicate with students, parents, and educators.
 Must be organized, punctual, and use sound judgment.
 Ability to work with a diverse student population including variety of ages, cognitive abilities.
 Ability to deal with sensitive issues as they relate to different minority groups and socio-economic levels.
 Ability to assist in working with students on different multicultural issues as they relate to the understanding of the various cultural groups.
 Ability to empathize with students of different minority and socioeconomic backgrounds.
 Ability to deal with and monitor student behavior.
 Ability to maintain student confidentiality.
 Perform a variety of duties.
 Ability to take direction, learn quickly and work closely with the teacher and other team members.
 Experience working cross-culturally and/or commitment to work toward improving one’s own cultural competence, i.e. valuing difference/diversity, recognizing personal limitations in one’s skills and expertise, and having the desire to learn in these areas.
 Experience working with school age children.
 Prior experience working in a public school setting.
 Experience using e-mail, internet, and word processing programs.
 Familiarity with office equipment and personal computers.
 Fluency in Spanish. Candidates who are fluent in Spanish will be given greater consideration.
Essential Functions:
 Will act as a liaison between cohort teachers and office teams.
 Will assist in making parent contacts about grades and attendance.
 Will help students develop goals and plans.
 Will support school-wide issues like PBIS, academic support classes, and discipline initiatives. All other
duties as assigned.
Work Environment: Advocate will work in sub school or cohort office as assigned by the principal.
Busy office environment with multiple priorities and frequent interruptions.
