POSITION SUMMARY: Reporting to the Dean of Natural & Health Sciences, and under the direction of the Clinical Supervisor for Surgical Technology Program, the Assistant Professor/ Instructor is primarily responsible for instructing and supervising Surgical Technology students in the classroom, laboratory, and clinical settings; representing the College in the clinical agency; working collaboratively with the Clinical Supervisor/Assistant Director and Chair of other Non-Nursing Natural and Health Science Programs to meet accreditation standards and develop the Program; as well as plan individualized clinical experiences for students; and maintaining positive working relationships with students, clinical agency personnel and physicians.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Didactic:

1.Teach core Surgical Technology courses using both in person and online teaching modalities;

2. Assist in the planning and development of instructional resources for students in Surgical Technology which support program learning objectives, meet requirements of secondary accreditors, and prepare students for board certification exam;
3. Evaluate student performance using varied assessment tools consistent with accreditation requirements;
4. Maintain grades for Surgical Technology students and prepare grade evaluation forms for each student;
5. Participate in meetings with the Clinical Director Supervisor/Coordinator weekly to coordinate lesson plans, teaching schedule, discuss progress of individual students, and ensure accreditation compliance;
6. Participate in recruiting and scheduling guest speakers and scheduling educational field trips for Surgical Technology students.
7. Maintain student advising and office hours;
8. Participate in divisional and college-wide faculty assignments and committees as assigned;
9. Participate in mandatory training/coursework. Including but not limited to:

Canvas, Quality Matters, and TechSmith Relay
Title IX and Sexual Misconduct
Sexual Harassment and Non-Discrimination
Security Policy and Notification of Security Reporting
FERPA
Municipal Ethics Law

10. Assume other duties as assigned.

Laboratory:

1. Instruct students in the laboratory setting consistent with current accreditation and board certification standards;
2. Provide student instruction in, and promote compliance with laboratory safety standards
3. Maintain preparation, clean-up, and re-stocking of the laboratory before and after each scheduled session;
4. Participate in performing skill demonstrations and assessing return demonstrations from each student; record skill assessment sheets on each student
5. Assist with administering and grading lab practical exams;
6. Participate in meetings with each student to discuss performance following lab practical exams;
7. Review weekly student self-evaluations and skill assessments for each student to determine where additional instruction is needed;
8. Maintain office hours/open lab hours to provide additional instruction and meet student needs as needed;
9. Administer "Prescription for Practice" forms and/or laboratory warnings when/if appropriate;
10. Participate in the planning and scheduling of each student to observe in the clinical setting during the fall semester.
11. Participate in inventory control and determining if/when supplies are needed
12.Train adjunct instructors in program procedures and surgical technology instructional methods to ensure consistency of training to all students;
13. Assume other duties as assigned.

Clinical:

1. Provide timely observation and supervision of student performance at clinical affiliate sites;
2. Provide each student with timely feedback about his/her performance, providing suggestions for improvement;
3. Maintain assigned student evaluations and attendance records on a weekly basis; identify need for and prepare clinical warnings if/when necessary;

4. Participate in the administration and grading of the clinical final exam at clinical affiliate site;
5. Communicate to students and their clinical preceptors the student's clinical objectives, expectations and behavior while in the clinical setting;
6. Work with Surgical Department to arrange for surgical cases and corresponding preceptors to meet clinical case requirements for graduation and board certification eligibility;
7. Maintain open communication with representatives of clinical affiliate, and notify Clinical Director of any problems or concerns associated with the clinical affiliate site;
8. Participate in orientation with the clinical affiliate(s) as required,
9. Act as a resource and liaison between Quincy College and assigned clinical affiliates;
10. Assist in the collection of student records regarding clinical preparatory information (immunization record, CPR certification, malpractice insurance, physicals and health insurance information, CORI check) according to department's needs. Follow up with written documents to students and Clinical Director reflecting missing required documents. Organize required documents and distribute to clinical affiliates;
11. Provide feedback regarding changes in the clinical manual for improvement and/or clarity,
12. Makes himself/herself available for student's questions and learning needs,
13. Exhibit professional behavior and serve as a role model for students,
14. Promote patient and student safety,
15. Create a positive and supportive learning environment, including being an advocate for the student's status as a learner,
16. Meet, as needed or required, with the Clinical Director,
17. Maintain current, state-of-the-art knowledge and skills,
18. Maintain and provide documentation of current/active certification in Surgical Technology,
19. Maintain membership in the Association of Surgical Technologists,
20. Maintain certification in CPR for the health care provider,
21. Maintain current immunizations and other health requirements needed to work in the clinical setting; and
22. Assume other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE: Master's degree preferred. Bachelor's Degree and current CST certification required.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Minimum five (5) years experience, either in the operating room scrub role or as instructor in surgical technology, or a combination of both, within the past ten (10) years. A minimum of one (1) year current experience in the Operating Room (current operating room experience is defined as one of the last three years spent as a practicing Surgical Technologist and/or an instructor in Surgical Technology). Prior teaching experience preferred. Must have a valid, unrestricted driver's license.

Additional Requirements: Successful completion of Quincy College's certification program (Canvas, Quality Matters, TSR) for teaching or, in the sole determination of Quincy College, the equivalent of that program.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Surgical Technology students.

TRAVEL: This position may require teaching at both the Quincy and Plymouth Campuses as well as the Boston site. Travel to clinical training sites is required.
