Haystack Oncology, A leading biotechnology firm based in Baltimore, MD, specializing in the development of advanced diagnostic solutions for cancer care, is seeking a Molecular Laboratory Research Scientist with a strong background in Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) technologies. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in developing, optimizing, and validating NGS-based tests for the analysis of tissue DNA and circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA). This position requires a blend of technical expertise in molecular biology, a deep understanding of oncology, and a commitment to advancing non-invasive cancer diagnostics.

  • NGS Test Development: NGS Assay Development: Design, optimize, and validate NGS assays for the detection and quantification of genetic alterations in tissue DNA and ctDNA samples. This includes primer design, protocol development, and optimization of workflows.
  • Experimental Execution: Perform DNA extraction, library preparation, sequencing, and data analysis. Ensure experiments are carried out with high precision and accuracy to produce reliable and reproducible results.
  • Workflow Optimization: Develop and refine workflows for the efficient processing of samples from extraction through to sequencing and data analysis, ensuring high sensitivity, specificity, and turnaround times.
  • Data Analysis and Interpretation: Utilize bioinformatics tools to analyze sequencing data. Interpret results in the context of cancer biology to identify clinically relevant genetic alterations.
  • Validation and Quality Control: Conduct validation studies to ensure the accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and reproducibility of NGS assays. Develop and implement quality control measures.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with bioinformatics, clinical research, and product development teams to integrate NGS assays into clinical workflow and support the transition from research to clinical diagnostics.
  • Continuous Improvement: Stay abreast of advancements in NGS technologies and methodologies to continually improve assay performance and workflow efficiency.
  • Literature and Innovation: Stay informed about the latest developments in NGS technologies, cancer genetics, and molecular diagnostics. Propose and implement innovative approaches to improve assay performance and clinical utility.
  • Documentation and Compliance: Maintain detailed records of experimental protocols, data, and analyses. Ensure all research activities comply with regulatory standards and laboratory SOPs.
  • Presentation: Communicate research findings through internal reports, presentations at scientific meetings, and publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • The role is based in a state-of-the-art laboratory in Baltimore, MD, requiring standard laboratory precautions and the use of personal protective equipment.

  • Involves handling of human biological specimens, including tissue samples and blood.

  • May require occasional extended hours to meet project deadlines.

  • Education:Master's degree in Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry, or related field. PhD preferred.
  • Experience:Minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience in a molecular biology laboratory, with a strong focus on NGS assay development, preferably in a clinical research or diagnostics setting.
  • Technical Skills: Expertise in DNA extraction, NGS library preparation, sequencing technologies, and molecular biology techniques. Experience with bioinformatics tools for NGS data analysis is highly desirable.
  • Analytical Skills: Ability to analyze complex datasets, with a strong understanding of genetic data and its implications in cancer.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively present data and findings to a scientific audience.
  • Teamwork: Proven ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment, with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with CLIA and CAP guidelines for laboratory testing is advantageous.
