Job Description

Title: Buyer

Location: Hastings, MI

Reports to: Materials Manager

Role Type: Salaried

Position Summary:

Coordinates material and supplier functions related to forecasting, material purchasing, inventory control, warehousing, material flow, quality dispositions, supplier contact, and distribution working closely with Sales, Customer Service, Planning and Operations; Works with logistics partner(s) to evaluate inbound transportation resources, routing, and costs to drive efficiencies and reduce cost while providing outstanding customer experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinates supply chain functions, which may include, but are not limited to, material purchasing, inventory control, material flow, quality dispositions, supplier contact, and distribution working with site Materials Managers to ensure that working capital goals are met while also meeting targets for on-time delivery and fill-rate of customer orders.
  • Engages with Sales, Customer Service and Operations to support the SIOP process related to buyouts for resale, and to promote alignment and understanding of customer needs throughout the organization.
  • Develops inventory targets and order points for buyouts for resale.
  • Develops order mins and max for establishing Kanban programs for ordering production, office, and MRO supplies; develop
  • Execute and manage VMI programs when applicable
  • Ensures maintenance of records and data essential to material programs including materials resource planning and provides support to accounts payable in resolution of discrepancies.
  • Participates in supplier and vendor negotiations.
  • Utilize data mining skills to analyze large sets of data and utilize the data to develop relevant KPI's to keep track of improvements.
  • Audit and approval of inbound transportation/freight invoices working with partners to streamline process that allows charges to be recorded on a timely manner as well as validation with Accounts Payable that charges are correctly reflected by Finance.
  • Ensures that daily activities are focused on continuous improvement of products and processes.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Secondary Accountabilities:

In addition to the accountabilities listed above, individuals may perform other duties as assigned, including work in other functional areas to cover absences or relief, to equalize peak work periods or otherwise to balance the workload.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelors' degree in Business, Supply Chain or a related field or a combination of education and experience.
  • 5 years of Supply Chain / Purchasing - Metals industry preferred
  • APICS/ISM certification a plus

Physical Requirements (Approximate time spent to be included in physical demands such as walking, or bending, specific lifting requirements (lbs) and/or other requirements such as vision or hearing.

Standing: Remaining upright on the feet, particularly for sustained periods of time. Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another. Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to-position. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires the substantial use of the upper extremities and back muscles. Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects
