The Department of Biological Sciences is seeking a Lab Technician. The Lab Technician is to adhere to all Purdue University Northwest and Department of Biological Sciences policies. The Lab Technician’s duties include maintaining clean and safe laboratory teaching and preparation areas and preparing teaching laboratories for laboratory activities. This includes planning, ordering and setting up supplies, and cleaning laboratory areas. The Lab Technician will maintain all laboratory equipment and supplies to standards set by Department of Biological Sciences. The Lab Technician will teach laboratories as needed and assist faculty in their research or teaching activities as time allows. The Lab Technician will assist with departmental social media and department outreach events.

• The Lab Technician will coordinate laboratories and be responsible for preparing materials for microbiology, introductory biology, ecology, anatomy and physiology, human biology, cellular biology, genetics, molecular biology, other life science labs as needed.
• The Technician will maintain laboratory equipment and laboratory areas; keep inventory of laboratory equipment, reagents and supplies; maintain microbial cultures and live biological specimens
• This individual will obtain price quotations for materials, place orders, and solve problems associated with orders
• This individual will hire, teach and supervise graduate and undergraduate student workers working in the laboratories
• The individual will assist faculty to plan, troubleshoot, and improve laboratory experiments; support department projects and initiatives

• Bachelor's degree in General Biology, Microbiology, Anatomy or Physiology (all with lab) or related field is required
• Master’s Degree in Biology preferred

• Three years of working experience in biology or microbiology lab is required
• Experience with laboratory instrument maintenance and troubleshooting is an asset
• Familiarity with software used in word processing, and database construction is preferred

• Excellent aseptic and laboratory techniques are required
• Molecular techniques are highly desirable
• Knowledge of a broad range of basic chemistry including use of common instrumentation (e.g., balances, burettes, pipettes, pH meters, burners, spectrophotometric instrumentation)
• Must be able to maintain and troubleshoot a wide variety of laboratory instruments
• Strong time management, multi-tasking, organizational, planning, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills are essential
• Ability to, work independently, be detail-oriented, and complete tasks in a timely manner
• Good communication, computation, computer skills (word processing, spreadsheet, database, Internet, etc.) and an excellent work ethic are critical
• Must be able to work a flexible schedule as labs occur anytime between 8 am-10 pm
