This position is about maintaining the health, safety, and well-being of dogs (and sometimes cats, but mainly dogs) that are staying away from home. By being great at this job, you will change what would be a stressful situation for the dog and the pet parent into something they both can actually look forward to. When the dog pulls on their leash to get IN to our building, and when they freely rush away from their parent to get to YOU because they know you're going to care for them and they are going to have fun while they are at Pupstate Pet Resort (currently called My Pet's Best Friend), THAT's when we know we're being great at this job.
Your work day as an animal care specialist takes place in our custom-built climate controlled dog boarding facility building which houses over 50 dog enclosures that are mainly indoor/covered outdoor runs and then we have 6 separate outdoor grass yards for the dogs to get time outside. Your goal is to get to know and bond with your assigned dogs so you can monitor their behavior, body language, intake, output, etc so we'll recognize if anything is out of the ordinary and we can address it right away.
This job is about routines. Dogs. Love. Routines. Your work day is in constant motion as you follow the procedures to feed and water the dogs, rotate the dogs to the outside yards, and clean/sanitize the enclosures. We do a LOT of cleaning as it is the best way to ensure that our guests stay healthy. When the dogs are inside for a feeding or rest time, we tackle the laundry, dishes, scooping outside yards. This is a very physical job with a lot of moving around.
While the work schedule can be flexible, our heavy workloads come on weekends and holidays (when people travel and need care for their dogs) so availability during these times is necessary. We do a schedule of rotating weekends (working every other weekend) but then major holidays become all hands on deck when we're packed full.
