JOB DESCRIPTION

Position Title: School Counselor

Department: Support Staff

Reports To: Principal

Salary Range: $39,000-$70,000 

Position Type: Exempt

Schedule: 10 Month Extended School Year (3 days after teachers leave and 7 days before teachers return)

Only on-time, online and complete applications will be considered. This is an in-person position. This position has a sign-on bonus of $5000 amortized from the time you start through the school year only if you are licensed. This position will remain open until filled.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND MAJOR FUNCTION:

The school counselor should have the ability to design and deliver a comprehensive school counseling program that promotes student achievement that is comprehensive in scope, preventive in design and developmental in nature. This person should have the ability to maintain a school counseling program that is an integral component of PSAS’s academic mission driven by student data and based on standards in academic, career and social/emotional development. It is necessary to promote and enhance the learning process for all PSAS students.

This job may be completed remotely in the event that students are unable to be physically present in school due to school decisions, external mandates or orders, or other school closure. Remote work is not otherwise considered a reasonable accommodation for serving students.

The following are activities expected from the counseling program at PSAS:

  • Individual student academic program planning
  • Interpreting cognitive, aptitude and achievement tests
  • Providing counseling to students who are tardy or absent
  • Providing counseling to students who have disciplinary problems
  • Providing counseling to students as to appropriate school dress
  • Collaborating with teachers to present school counseling curriculum lessons
  • Analyzing grade point averages in relationship to achievement
  • Interpreting students records
  • Providing teachers with suggestions for effective classroom management
  • Ensuring student records are maintained as per state and federal regulations
  • Helping the school principal identify and resolve student issues, needs, and problems
  • Providing individual and small group counseling services to students
  • Advocating for students at individual education plan meetings, student study teams, and school attendance review meetings
  • Analyzing disaggregated data
  • Other duties as assigned by Business Manager, Principal, or Director

PHYSICAL DEMAND OF POSITION: 

To perform this job successfully, an individual must have the requisite knowledge, skills, and ability to be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. It is determined that in order to carry out the essential duties and responsibilities an individual must be able to work at a desk, conference table, or in meetings of various configurations; stand and circulate for extended periods of time; hear and understand speech at normal levels; see up close, at a distance, and have depth perception; communicate so others will be able to clearly understand normal conversations; bend and twist, stoop, kneel, run and crawl; reach in all directions; and lift and carry up to 25 pounds.

Note: This position requires the ability to work occasional evenings to support all programs, field trips and to monitor students before/after school or during lunch and recess. You must be able to work these hours in order to be considered for this position.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

MINIMUM REQUIRED:

  • School Counselor Endorsement or Master’s degree in Community/Family Counseling and passing the PLACE or PRAXIS exam for School Counseling

PREFERRED:

  • 3 or more years of experience as a K-8 school counselor
  • Prior experience working for a charter school

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Participation in payroll automatic deposit.
