SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS: The primary responsibility of the ESS Special Education Generalist Teacher - Deaf and Hard of Hearing Teacher is to plan, organize, and implement an appropriate instructional program in an elementary or secondary learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential; Performs instructional and related duties in accordance with District policies and terms of the teacher contract. The Teacher also maintains a cooperative attitude with staff, parents, and students.

REQUIRED:
  • Valid Colorado Teaching License within 60 days from date of hire
  • Endorsed in: Special Education Specialist Endorsement Birth - 21 in Deaf and Hard of Hearing and
  • Elementary Endorsement or highly qualified by passing the PLACE/PRAXIS test for Elementary Education
  • Employee must complete a fingerprint-based criminal background check and must be cleared by the Office of Human Resources
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabulary
 
PREFERRED:
  • Master's Degree
  • Previous experience and ability to work with children with special needs in hearing loss
  • Previous experience and training in providing interventions in an educational environment
  • Ability to work with elementary and secondary school students
  • Previous experience working with at-risk students
  • Experience in facilitating staffings
  • Experience with and knowledge of writing behavior plans
  • Ability and willingness to lead a team of paraprofessionals and educational assistants in the classroom
  • Ability and willingness to collaborate and team with classroom teachers
  • Ability to implement a standards-based program
  • Flexibility in teaching and scheduling
  • Knowledge of and experience with IDEA 2004
  • Knowledge of and experience with District Policies and Procedures
  • Knowledge of Infinite Campus or willingness to take training
  • Experience in a Title I or low income setting
  • Previous experience as a certified teacher
  • Knowledge of content standards and implementation of standards-based curriculum
  • Ability to teach and meet the academic needs of all students ensuring academic progress in all content areas especially in reading/writing and mathematics
  • Ability to collaborate with all instructional staff
  • Previous experience to use data to make instructional decisions
  • Knowledge/experience with the five components of reading and commitment to support and implement explicit and systematic reading instruction, based on scientific research
  • Ability to use technology and integrate technology skills into the curriculum
  • Knowledge / experience teaching the diverse learner especially students who may have a specific learning plan such as an IEP, ILP, ELL, 504, etc.
  • Demonstrated effective classroom management skills
  • Knowledge /experience with and ability to implement scientific-based research best practices
  • Previous experience with and ability to utilize effective small groups and whole class direct instruction strategies to differentiate instruction
  • Knowledge / experience in implementing the Title I parental involvement plan
  • Knowledge / experience with Positive Behavior Support Program or willing to implement the school-wide discipline plan

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The following statements of duties and responsibilities are intended to describe the general nature and level or work being performed by individuals assigned to this position.   • Assesses audiological implications related to speech and language development for students who are dear or hard of hearing
  • Participates in the identification, evaluation and placement for students with hearing loss, following federal and state guidelines and recommended procedures
  • Develops Communication Plan based on the communication strengths, needs and preferences of the child and family
  • Develops appropriate IEP goals related to skill deficits which have occurred as a result of the student's hearing loss; monitors progress and maintains appropriate documentation of student growth
  • Demonstrates knowledge of specialized assessment, instruction, interventions, modifications and assistive technology for individual students with hearing impairments, including deafness (including those with multiple disabilities)
  • Provides specialized instruction related directly to the areas of need identified by present level of academic and functional performance
  • Demonstrates effective skills related to instructing students, families, paraprofessionals, teaches, and other staff in the effective use of specialized equipment
  • Selects and advocates for effective communication strategies, modifications and accommodations for students who are deaf or hard of hearing
  • Travel to assigned job site(s) requires driving. Employee may be asked to drive to any member or associate member district at any time using personal vehicle. Reimbursement in accordance to board policy
  • Provide a variety of classroom techniques and methods
