THE ROLE

The Director of Nursing assists the CNO in the administration and leadership of achieving strategic goals of a department", organization and/or clinical service area. Assumes responsibility for the oversight and outcomes within a specified clinical specialty area by forecasting trends, setting strategic objectives, providing leadership and development to Nurse Educators, Nurse Managers, House Supervisors, Staff Nurse Leaders and Front Line staff through the implementation of actions to achieve defined clinical, financial and strategic outcomes. The Director demonstrates advanced leadership and communication skills and the ability to manage and successfully mediate conflict, while upholding the organization's commitment to core values, productivity and quality.

Provides leadership and direction with a variety of programs and initiatives identified in the strategic plan associated with nursing practice and patient care. The Director supports evidence-based practice, education, research and theory. The role of the Director is to ensure staff competence and continued professional advancement, patient safety, and achievement of patient care outcomes across the continuum.

MAJOR CHALLENGES:

  2. To assist clinicians and managers systematically plan for and sustain change.

  3. Collaboration with other managers and disciplines to achieve outcomes.

  4. Balance stewardship, patient care experience, and quality.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Assists in developing, coordinating, evaluating and interpreting nursing activities, policies, goals, and objectives to other departments and to nursing staff as needed. Maintains current knowledge of nursing practice standards (ANA, Hospital, TJC, CMS, Magnet, State of Oregon, etc.), nursing department policies and procedures.

  • In collaboration with the CNO and Nurse Executive Team, ensures a current Strategic Plan. Identifies and assesses what is required to ensures success, and provides for a systematic review and progress report. Outcome is communicated to the appropriate audience in a timed and sequential fashion.

  • Develops and implements a proactive evaluation of nursing practice and processes, ensuring compliance to TJC, Magnet, and other regulatory standards.

  • Interviews and select Nursing Education/Staff Development team, and provides direction for clinical education needs in collaboration with the Regional Director for Education.

  • Partners with Regional nursing to establish and monitor PPMC outcome measures needed to support nursing quest to top decile performance.

  • Defines and implements process improvement on key initiatives that result in improvement in patient care delivery.

  • Directs activities to provide the education and communication needed to enact necessary practice changes.

  • Proactively develops a communication strategy to ensure timely and up to date information to stakeholders.

  • Sets Nursing Practice Standards based on scientific and research based principles.

  • Develops and manages the budget for the assigned clinical division.

  • Develops staff and manager's expertise in project management, data analysis, information technology, clinical, managerial and financial practice.

  • Assesses, plans, initiates and evaluates teaching/coaching based on assessment of person, professional or organizational needs.

  • Acts as a change agent to assist the department to prepare for, influence and respond to the dynamic nature of healthcare as well as proactively plans for future directions in clinical practice to support the highest quality of patient care.

  • Represents Department of Nursing and patient care on internal and external committees and task forces locally and nationally; this includes Clinical Ladder Board.

  • Advocates for excellence in patient care and nursing practice, for changes in process of care delivery, and for professional development opportunities.

  • Advocates for systems and standards that support the dependent, independent and interdependent nursing interventions.

  • Provides consultation and guidance to nursing units and divisions on achieving quality, productivity and patient satisfaction goals.

  • Develops and integrates new business models and develop models of care/service.

  • Enhances strategic and programmatic relationships with physicians, other health care staff and community members.

  • Orients/instructs new managers, nursing leaders, and staff in performance improvement techniques.

  • Ensures key metrics are defined, developed, tracked, and re-evaluated.

  • Utilizes existing structures (including Shared Decision Making, Releasing Time to Care and Quality Council) to engage staff to lead efforts in improving patient safety and quality outcomes.

  • Assess, recommend, and implement changes to the PPMC Professional Practice Model on an annual basis. Develop a process which enhances staff input and participation in linking daily work to the PPMC Professional Practice Model.

  • Identifies Best Practices within the Region and facilitates practice improvements to enhance quality and cost outcomes.

  • Continually updates knowledge about nursing trends, issues and areas of expertise and actively seeks opportunities to apply this knowledge to patient care, outcomes and practice.

  • Oversees the recruitment, selection and development of nurse leaders within a defined area, and assumes accountability for the recruitment, retention, development and satisfaction of staff within the area.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's Degree in applied clinical field

  • Ph.D. DNP, PhD, DNSc, or ND.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing

  • Upon hire: Oregon Registered Nurse License (Vendor Managed)

  • 3 years of nursing experience at the supervisory or manager level

  • Director level experience

  • Experience with Project Management and Performance Improvement (Change facilitation and Lean Belt experience)

  • 3 years of hands on project management experience

  • Experience leading in a Magnet designated facility, to include direct participation in Magnet designation or redesignation

  • Experience related to Joint Commission, CMS, patient safety and compliance initiatives needed to address regulations or events

  • Advanced knowledge of nursing principles, education programs, nursing process and models of care.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and skills in the principles of administration, facilitation skills, adult learning, and advanced practice

  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills in implementing LEAN principles, rapid-cycle change, and other performance improvement tools (CAP, Workout) conducive to the health care environment.

  • Knowledge and application of Magnet framework and standards

  • Effective leadership and communication skills both verbal and in writing adapted to stakeholder audience

  • Ability to present recommendations and/or decisions and persuade other, as necessary, with tact and diplomacy

  • Demonstrated ability to direct, prioritize, and manage multiple projects and complex processes simultaneously often through teams

  • Demonstrated ability to provide responsive leadership, to coach, mentor, delegate and coordinate work, motivate management and staff

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate and engage with people in all professional and educational levels. Strong team building, negotiation, project organization and implementation skills.

  • Current Knowledge of Joint Commission, CMS, Magnet, and key regulatory standards and regulations; effectively coordinates with other leaders to ensure nursing service staff are compliant and prepared for various surveys

  • Ability to lead, interpret," and implement basic nursing research

  • Ability to assist or contribute to the development of the annual departmental budget.
