Providence Schools is Hiring a Supervisor of World Languages Near Providence, RI

The Providence Public School District (PPSD) serves approximately 22,000 students (about the seating capacity of Madison Square Garden) attending our 37 schools. PPSD employs more than 3,200 professionals who work in and provide support to our schools, which include 20 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, 11 high schools, and 2 public district charter schools. Of our employees, about 2,000 are educators, and over 600 others directly support our schools' students and families.

Our schools are diverse learning communities. Approximately 68% of our students are Latinx, 15% Black, 7% White, 4% Asian, 5.5% Multi-racial and 1% Native American. Approximately 40% of students are multilingual, and about 16% receive special education services. Approximately 55% of students come from homes where English is not the primary language spoken. Our students and families speak more than 55 languages and hail from 91 countries of origin.

The Supervisor of World Languages will provide leadership and direction for the district's world languages programs, from elementary through high school levels. This position is responsible for curriculum development, professional learning, and the promotion of bilingual/multilingual education. Working under the Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction, you will ensure that language programs meet the diverse needs of our student population and align with state and federal guidelines, including the oversight of the Seal of Bilingual Literacy to acknowledge students' linguistic achievements.***Contingent upon funding***

RIDE Requirements:

  • Rhode Island District Level Administrator Certificate – Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment and/or Building Level Administrator and one or more of the following: 

  • Any RI World Language Certification

  • Right to Read Proficiency within one year of hire

  • Master's degree from an accredited college or university in education, Linguistics, or a related field with a focus on language educationrequired

  • 5 years of outstanding teaching or related experience in world languages with a record of successfully impacting student language acquisition and cultural understanding

  • ESL Preferred

  • Bilingual or Multilingual preferred

We’re looking for someone to:?

  • Develop and oversee the implementation of a comprehensive world languages curriculum that fosters language proficiency and cultural competence among students. 
  • Meet regularly with world language department and teacher leaders to ensure vertical and horizontal articulation of curriculum and instructional vision. 
  • Collaborate with teachers, Principals, and Transformation Officers to integrate world languages across the curriculum, supporting school performance and student achievement. 
  • Visit schools to observe world language instruction, providing actionable feedback to educators, coaches, and principals to enhance teaching practices and student engagement in language learning. 
  • Lead the district's Seal of Biliteracy program, ensuring equitable access and promoting the recognition of students' bilingual/multilingual skills. 
  • In collaboration with the Executive Director of Professional Learning, conduct professional development workshops for world languages teachers, focusing on innovative teaching strategies, curriculum integration, and best practices in language education. 
  • Analyze program data to guide continuous improvement in world languages education and the Seal of Biliteracy program in collaboration with the Office of Multilingual Learners and The Senior Director of School Counseling.
  • Facilitate discussions with educators and stakeholders to address challenges and celebrate successes within the world languages program. 
  • Report program progress and achievements related to world languages and the Seal of Biliteracy to school leaders and the Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction. 
  • Manage budgets related to world languages programs and resources, optimizing the use of funds to support high-quality language education. 
  • Achievement Focus: Sets challenging goals, demonstrates persistence, and overcomes obstacles to achieve goals.
  • Equity: Exhibits a commitment to equity and creates a sense of urgency to close achievement gaps. 
  • Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction.
  • Demonstrated experience managing or significantly contributing to a Seal of Biliteracy program or similar bilingual recognition initiatives.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with educational colleagues and stakeholders, fostering a professional community of adult learners.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to engage in constructive conversations and provide meaningful feedback.
  • Experience using data to inform instructional practices and program development in language education. 
  • Commitment to educational equity and the belief in the potential of all students to achieve linguistic proficiency.
