Underwrite commercial real estate loans that are secured by income producing real estate asset classes that generally encompass retail, industrial, and multifamily properties. Analysts are responsible for underwriting new conventional and participation loan production that meet Protective Life’s investment guidelines as well as assisting with more complex asset management underwriting assignments.

Responsibilities:

• Independently underwrite conventional commercial mortgage loans that meet Protective Life’s investment goals in terms of allocated capital, risk, duration, and yield – subject to approval by the CMO
• Independently underwrite participating mortgage loans with the objective to drive extraordinary income. Focus on value-add opportunities through ground-up development of commercial income producing properties as well as repositioning of value-add assets – subject to approval by the CMO
• Able to function both independently AND seamlessly within a team
• Assist with management of existing relationships within the mortgage banking community and with commercial real estate developers/investors. Consistently communicate Protective Life’s CML underwriting criteria to mortgage bankers and prospective borrowers so they always have an understanding of our credit underwriting requirements and standards
• Manage and execute the loan process from initial underwriting through loan closing which includes a comprehensive underwriting and credit review, directing the application and commitment process, approving third-party reports and working with the legal department toward a successful closing. Clear and constant communication with the mortgage banker and borrower during the closing process is an essential element of the role
• Maintain a constant understanding of the commercial real estate market’s positioning and how it’s trending relative to values, rents, and occupancies. Stay abreast of industry news as well as credit wherewithal of major tenants in the market
• Analyze troubled assets in the mortgage portfolio and assist in workouts
• Underwrite loans and value commercial properties for acquisition purposes
• As needed, serve as project lead on select ad-hoc Risk Management projects in response to market and industry movement and / or identified risks

• BS/BA degree in Finance, Accounting, Business or equivalent. CCIM, CFA, CPA and / or MAI are a plus
• 10 or more years prior specialized experience in a similar underwriting / production role (commercial real estate, corporate finance, commercial banking, or similar)
• Ability to independently perform well in a customer facing role

Protective’s targeted salary range for this position is $120,000 to $145,000. Actual salaries may vary depending on factors, including but not limited to, job location, skills, and experience. The range listed is just one component of Protective’s total compensation package for employees.

This position also offers additional incentive opportunities [through an annual incentive based on individual and Company performance] OR [through cash compensation as part of a sales incentive plan (SIP).
