ORGANIZATION:
Mount Auburn Cemetery comprises 175 acres and is situated in Watertown and Cambridge near Boston, Massachusetts. Founded in 1831, and now visited by over 200,000 people each year, Mount Auburn is a National Historic Landmark, recognized as the first “rural cemetery” and the inspiration for the American Parks Movement during the 19th century. As an active cemetery, Mount Auburn inspires all who visit, comforts the bereaved, and commemorates the dead in a landscape of exceptional beauty. As an accredited arboretum, Mount Auburn features 5,000 trees and more than 20,000 plants overall.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
  • Supervise all full-time and seasonal greenhouse staff, including but not limited to training, annual performance reviews, and recommendations for personnel while prioritizing projects and daily work assignments for efficient use of time and labor.
  • Oversee volunteers, and other department employees sent to perform tasks for the greenhouse manager. This includes maintaining a 30-year student-work collaboration with the Perkins School for the Blind.
  • Oversee all purchases for the greenhouse and nursery, as well as providing all necessary PPE.
  • Responsible for production of perennials, annuals, groundcovers, and woody plants. May include procuring plants or seeds, scheduling, propagating, planting, transplanting, watering, fertilizing and pest management in the greenhouse and nursery complex. Expected to keep updated accurate records of plant production.
  • Responsible for continued development and refinement of the organic production program to encourage and promote an ecologically sensitive approach for operations in the greenhouses.
  • Oversee the operation and refinement of sophisticated greenhouse systems: Wadsworth Controls, Anderson Injectors, rainwater recycling and irrigation units. Arrange for periodic maintenance and inspection of roof venting and shade curtain systems.
  • Responsible for water conservation program by primarily using collected rainwater from the underground cistern for use in best watering practices including: ebb and flood irrigation benches, soaker hoses, low impact sprinkler heads, and timers. Adhere to the drought management directives of the Charles River Watershed Association when applicable.
  • Provide floral tributes for lot owners on a walk-in and mail order basis. This includes stocking a sales area with cut flower vases, basket bouquets, log baskets, sprays, potted plants, wreaths, niche bouquets, etc., along with overseeing placement on lots and in the columbarium. It also includes purchasing supplementary plant materials for holidays and coordinating with staff from other departments to place tributes on lots. Expected to keep and record weekly revenue from greenhouse sales.
  • Responsible for ordering necessary materials such as seeds, rooted cuttings, plugs, cut flowers, bulbs, plants, soil mixes, containers, fertilizers, pesticides, etc. on a timely basis while managing the proper paperwork, including purchase orders.
  • Responsible for enhancing safety in the workplace by ensuring that all employees under their supervision are properly trained to use any required equipment and are adhering to all safety rules and procedures. Responsible for making sure that required procedures related to employee accidents are carried out in a thorough and timely manner.
  • Occasionally lead tours of Cemetery for donors or community groups, and may assist with special events, cemetery business and programs as needed
  • May be required to work and/or schedule other staff as needed on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays for watering and other duties.
  • May be required to perform other duties as requested by the Vice President to assist other Sections or Departments.
As with all Cemetery staff, assist with any cemetery business including special meetings, conferences, Friends events and public programs as needed.
Demonstrate responsible stewardship for the environment when planning and implementing all duties incorporated in job description.
  REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in horticulture, agronomy, plant science or a closely related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Five years of greenhouse work experience
  • Two years’ experience managing staff
  • Driver’s license
  • Pesticide Applicator's License in "Greenhouse" (Category 26), or willingness to obtain within 6 months.
  • Ability to communicate successfully with staff and visitors.
  REQUIRED PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
 
  • Ability to use a variety of horticultural tools and equipment such as hand-held sprayers, rototillers and handpruners.
  • Ability to shovel soil and mulch, and to lift flats of plants, bags of soil, fertilizer, lime and peat moss up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in Greenhouses, which can be extremely hot in summer. Ability to work outdoors in all weather.
