TITLE: Temporary Residential Camp Counselor

STATUS: Part-time; Non-Exempt

PAY RANGE: $24

REPORTS TO: Camp Connect Manager

Camp Connect reunites siblings who are separated in the San Diego County foster care system through a six-day, residential summer camp and 10 additional day events throughout the year.

Promises2Kids is seeking temporary Residential Camp Counselors for the six-day residential summer camp in the mountains of Julian. Under the direction of the Camp Connect Manager, the Temporary Residential Camp Counselor will support the training of volunteers, planning of camp activities, and supervision of children attending the camp.

Compensation: Regular rate of $24/hour and Standby rate of $15/hour

· Includes room and board, and meals during summer camp.

· Eligible for overtime and doubletime

This is a temporary seasonal employment opportunity from approximately July 1 – August 7 with an average of 10-15 hours per week prior to camp.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

· All Camp Employees are expected to live, sleep and work at the six-day camp (transportation to and from camp, meals and lodging at camp will be provided).

· Support training of volunteers prior to the 6-day summer camp.

· Support committee activities such as creation, development, planning and implementation of camp theme, activity structure, etc.

· Supervision of campers during activities such as swimming, zipline, mountain biking, archery, dance and drama, arts and crafts, environmental education, sports, overnight camping, horseback riding.

· Ensure a fun, safe, and positive camp experience for campers.

· Manage behavior issues and participation in all camp activities, run some activities whilst always promoting positive character development.

· Responsible for participation of small groups of youth in assigned activities.

· Ensure youth engage appropriately in all Camp activities.

· Provide emotional support and guidance to campers.

· Ensure campers’ medical needs are met through monitoring, and utilizing onsite nursing.

· Ensure safety of all campers in their group including setting clear safety expectations, observing and engaging campers while in their care, assessing the appropriateness of camper behaviors, following emergency procedures and all COVID-19 safety protocols.

· Supervise youth at all times including overnight in a cabin with approximately 5-10 campers.

· Engage campers with positivity, including participating in all activities, overnight hikes, and other activities such as swimming, arts & crafts, archery, biking, hiking.

· Support set-up and clean-up of Summer Camp. Included but not limited to: moving boxes, loading and unloading vehicles, organizing materials, etc.

· Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must pass a San Diego County CWS background clearance.
  • Must be available to attend all 6 days of summer camp - August 1-6 and various days throughout July.
  • Must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
  • Must be 21 years of age.
  • 2 years experience working with youth of different ages.
  • Experience working with youth in an overnight camp setting preferred.
  • Experience working with youth from disadvantaged circumstances preferred.
  • Ability to walk and stand for long periods of time.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in varying temperatures.
  • Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification preferred.
  • Proficient in public speaking and giving presentations.
  • Proficiency in computer skills, including entire MS Office Suite.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work with a variety of people and represent Promises2Kids in a positive and professional manner to all staff, visitors, donors, and the community.
  • Ability to work independently, demonstrate initiative, and to complete and report on assignments.
  • Ability to work under pressure, set priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Able to work as part of a close-knit team.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with confidentiality, diplomacy and tact.
  • Ability to pay attention to detail and also remain oriented to the “big picture” and established goals.
  • Excellent organizational, management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Must be able to successfully pass the child abuse clearance, fingerprinting, and background check.
  • Must possess reliable personal transportation and meet insurance requirements.
