School Based Counselor Job Description

JOB TITLE: School-Based Counselor: The position would serve the school districts of East Haddam and/or Old Lyme , CT.

STATUS: Full Time (32h/Week) ($45,000 - $55,000)

REPORTS TO: Executive Director & Director of School-Based Services

POSITION SUMMARY: The School Based Counselor provides individual and group counseling, conducts assessments, participates in interdisciplinary treatment planning and provides crisis intervention consultation as needed. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following (other duties may be assigned):

  • Client engagement
  • Administers intakes and biopsychosocial assessments.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary treatment planning.
  • Provides individual, group therapy to school students at contracted schools.
  • Participates in professional collaboration with other involved service providers
  • Prepares client for transitions and discharge and Completes transition and discharge summaries
  • Documents and manages client file according to requirements of regulatory agencies.
  • Provides crisis intervention consultation as needed.
  • Provides in-service training to home staff as appropriate, and in conjunction with training services under the direction of the Executive Director.
  • Participates in Agency-wide training programs/in-services
  • Participates in weekly individual or group supervision.
  • Submits service activity logs, weekly and monthly schedules, time sheets, and like material to business manager.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's Degree or comparable certification in Psychology, Social Work or relative field, from an accredited college or university.
  • CAC (certified addiction counselor) highly preferred.
  • Licensure in state of Connecticut preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working in mental health and addictions fields.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Participates as a member of Quality Management Committees.
  • All other duties as assigned by supervision.

SPECIAL ATTRIBUTES

  • Strong biopsychosocial assessment skills.
  • Strong treatment planning skills.
  • Minimal supervision regarding use of time, able to prioritize work assignments.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with professionals and clients/families.
  • Possesses characteristics of compassion, active listening skills, evaluative skills, reporting skills and general communication skills. Highly motivated and able to work independently as well as part of a team coordinating client care.
  • Ability to make sound decisions in emergency situations.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret human service periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as percentages, mean, mode and median ability to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
