A private duty nurse provides personalized nursing care to patients in their homes or other private settings. The job description for a private duty nurse typically includes the following responsibilities and qualifications:
Responsibilities:
  • Assessment and Monitoring: Conduct comprehensive assessments of patients' health status, including physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Monitor vital signs, observe symptoms, and evaluate overall health progress.
  • Medication Management: Administer medications as prescribed by physicians, ensuring correct dosage and timing. Monitor for potential side effects or adverse reactions.
  • Wound Care: Provide wound care management, including cleaning, dressing changes, and monitoring for signs of infection or healing.
  • Assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs): Assist patients with personal care tasks such as bathing, grooming, dressing, toileting, and mobility, as needed.
  • Nutritional Support: Assist with feeding, meal preparation, and dietary planning, ensuring patients receive adequate nutrition and hydration.
  • Patient Education: Educate patients and their families on health conditions, treatment plans, medication management, and strategies for promoting wellness and independence.
  • Coordination of Care: Collaborate with other healthcare professionals, such as physicians, therapists, and social workers, to coordinate comprehensive care plans tailored to patients' individual needs.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate and thorough medical records, documenting assessments, interventions, and patient responses to treatment.
  • Emergency Response: Be prepared to respond to medical emergencies, providing immediate care and contacting emergency services if necessary.
  • Emotional Support: Offer emotional support and companionship to patients and their families, fostering a trusting and compassionate relationship.
Qualifications:
  • Registered Nurse (RN) Licensure: Hold a current and valid license as a registered nurse in the state of practice.
  • Clinical Experience: Have previous experience in nursing, preferably in areas such as home health care, critical care, or medical-surgical nursing.
  • Knowledge and Skills: Possess strong clinical assessment skills, critical thinking abilities, and proficiency in nursing procedures and techniques.
  • Communication Skills: Demonstrate effective communication skills, both verbal and written, to interact with patients, families, and interdisciplinary healthcare teams.
  • Compassion and Empathy: Show empathy, compassion, and patience in providing care to patients with diverse needs and backgrounds.
  • Flexibility: Be adaptable and able to work independently in various home environments, accommodating different schedules and patient preferences.
  • CPR Certification: Maintain current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and/or Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), depending on the employer's requirements.
Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Excellent Communication skills; ability to be flexible and work well with others.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information.
  • Ability to prioritize and multitask.
  • Drivers License and active Auto Insurance required.
Shift Care: 8-hour, 12-hour; Other shifts determined by case.
Travel: Must be willing to travel upwards of 40 miles.
