WHAT WE DO
We provide those experiencing symptoms of serious mental illness and other co-occurring disorders with alternatives to institutional placement. We are a private, non-profit mental health agency operating in San Francisco, Napa and Sonoma Counties. The primary treatment philosophy of Progress Foundation is described by the Principles of Social Rehabilitation, which emphasize the role of a home-like treatment environment, the importance of building honorable therapeutic relationships and the significance of encouraging the active participation of the client in their treatment planning.

Staff work with clients to create treatment plans tailored to the unique strengths of the individual. Services are targeted to respond to the needs of individuals who are considered severely disabled due to mental illness and co-occurring substance abuse. Progress Foundation provides the full spectrum of treatment from a community-based Psychiatric Crisis Clinic and short-term Crisis Residential to moderate and long-term Transitional Residential treatment. We also provide Case Management Services in independent housing and treatment-focused cooperative living apartments.

OUR SERVICES - Each program level is designed to meet the needs of clients with the level of support necessary for that individual. Admission to all Progress Foundation programs is on a voluntary basis only. Services are specifically targeted to respond to the needs of individuals who are considered severely disabled due to mental illness and co-occurring substance abuse. Program services and staffing reflect a strong commitment to diversity and an awareness of the critical importance of cultural, ethnic, linguistic and social issues in the provision of effective community behavioral health services.​

COUNSELOR

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the supervision of the Program Director or the Assistant Director, Counselors provide support and assistance to clients of an adult psychiatric transitional residential treatment program. The Counselors advocate for and respond to clients' treatment and rehabilitation needs. Specific functions are outlined in the job description.

Generally, Counselor duties include: Promote the philosophy of social rehabilitation as it applies to residential treatment; performance of intake interviews; group, individual, and family counseling; treatment plan development and implementation; coordination of activities; discharge planning; and developing and maintaining contact with clients' therapists and related treatment programs. Maintain computer requirements of the County of Marin Community Behavioral Health Services. In addition, the counselor is required to maintain clinical records and to perform minor household repair and cleaning tasks. Candidates must be willing to work a flexible schedule, including some weekend and overnight shifts.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's degree in a mental health related field preferred. Experience may be substituted for the degree requirement, depending on nature and length of experience. Specific experience in residential treatment and/or knowledge of social rehabilitation is preferred. At least one year's experience in a community mental health program is preferred. Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Basic word processing skills. Must demonstrate an acceptable level of maturity, good judgment and emotional stability. Must be able to negotiate several flights of stairs and lift and carry 20lb packages multiple times during each work shift.

Upon receipt of a job offer and before commencement of employment, must submit to a fingerprint check and health screening exam in order to obtain clearance from the State Dept. of Social Services, Community Care Licensing. Valid California driver's license and insurability under the agency's auto insurance policies are preferred. Employment is contingent upon meeting the above minimum qualifications and verification of previous employment and education.
