Job Title: Assistant Professor, Mass Communications (Generalist or Digital Media)

Reporting Structure: Mass Communications

Division: School of Performing Arts & Communication/College of Arts & Humanities

Job Summary:

A nine-month teaching position responsible for providing instruction within the School of Performing Arts and Communication. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate students in lower and upper level division courses in Multimedia Journalism, Persuasive Communications and Video Production/Editing. Teaching can include courses in digital production, multimedia journalism, advertising and public relations, as well as additional areas of expertise (such as digital media, mobile communications, research methods, social media, and other applied elements of mass mediated communications).

Duties/Responsibilities:

* Teach various introductory, intermediate and advanced courses in Mass Communications, Public Relations and Advertising.

* Responsible for teaching assigned classes in Journalism courses (including Public Affairs Reporting, Announcing, Video Editing, Desktop Publishing, Communication Graphics) and other assigned major electives in the Mass Communications Department.

* Help students fulfill their maximum potential in mastering course content; maintaining thorough and up-to-date knowledge in his/her regular teaching field; maintaining standards of professional conduct and ethics.

* Be familiar with multiple delivery systems, including blended, online, and distant learning formats.

* Have familiarity with advising/mentoring students in undergraduate course programs and in application for graduate programs and employment opportunities.

* Experienced with developing academic programs.

* Provide department service, including student organization assistance and sponsorship.

* Actively serve on departmental and institutional committee work.

* Creative/scholarly research in academic field.

* Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

* Solid knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Final Cut Pro, DVD Studio; multitrack audio recording and editing software such as Audition or Soundtrack Pro. Additionally, familiarity with consumer level applications like iMovie, Movie Maker, Photostory, GarageBand, Audacity, as well as Microsoft Office Suite and WordPress.

* At least two years of successful teaching experience at the college level, including course curriculum development; evidence of scholarly activity in the area of mass communications; evidence of very strong photographic and video graphic skills; and evidence of active involvement in ongoing research, including grants and publications.

* Professional experience in multimedia, video production, public relations, advertising, social media, etc.)

* Ability to work closely with various members of the university community in concept and project development to meet their needs.

* Strong graphic design, photographic and video graphic skills.

* Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical personnel. Must also demonstrate experience working in a team-oriented environment.

* Experience with both PC's and Mac's a plus as well as a wide variety of software applications.

* Strong understanding and command of social media platforms

* Work collaboratively with both internal and external groups.

Education and Experience:

* For Assistant Professor, a PhD or terminal degree in Communication, Mass Media or related fields is preferred.

* For Instructor, knowledge and abilities normally acquired through a Master's degree in a digital media related discipline or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
