Prince William County Service Authority is Hiring a Safety Specialist Near Woodbridge, VA

Position Summary

Primary responsibilities are to assist the Safety and Security Manager in maintaining a safe, healthy, accident-free work environment through performing safety audits and inspections, providing safety education and coaching to employees, and assisting with conducting and/or coordinating safety training. The Safety Specialist will ensure employee compliance with the Service Authority's (SA) safety standards and work within the guidelines of governmental regulations. The position also performs technical work related to regulatory requirements and various administrative duties. Overall goals are set, and the worker assists in determining the specific tasks and assignments to be performed.

Position Responsibilities / Essential Job Functions

  • Performs safety and security audits and inspects facilities, machinery, and equipment to identify and correct potential hazards or vulnerabilities and ensure safety regulation compliance.
  • Investigates accidents, near-miss incidents, and occupational injuries to determine causes and implement preventive measures.
  • Conducts, coordinates, and assists in developing worker training in safety regulations, hazardous condition monitoring, and use of safety equipment.
  • Provides safety education and coaching to office and field personnel.
  • Assists in recording and maintaining training data, safety audits, and other leading indicators related to compliance recordkeeping and annual goals.
  • Assists with developing written safety procedures by inspecting and reviewing areas, equipment, processes, and work activities.
  • Assists in developing Job Hazard Analysis for new equipment and non-routine tasks.
  • Ensures SA emergency and safety equipment is inspected.
  • Identifies industry practices via research and leads their implementation for continuous improvement to reduce work process risks, raise safety awareness, and improve safe work practices.
  • Provides technical advice, coaching, guidance, and mentoring to employees on safety initiatives and necessary changes.
  • Assists in compiling and submitting accident reports required by regulatory agencies, including OSHA 300 Recordkeeping.
  • Assists with the administration of the drug and alcohol program, including random drug testing and CDL requirements.
  • Assists in conducting regular safety audits and inspections of Authority division/departments, including inspecting facilities, worksites, equipment, work practices, and safety devices using job site safety-inspection reports to ensure compliance with required workplace safety standards, regulations, and Authority policies.
  • Works within company policy as outlined in the Safety Program and OSHA Safety rules.
  • Operates a Service Authority Vehicle.
  • May be deemed essential at any time.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.
Essential Skills and Experience

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Knowledge of Occupational Safety, health, and engineering principles, understanding of the theory behind machine guarding and Lockout/Tag-out electrical safety, and knowledge of regulatory compliance laws and the ability to apply such knowledge.
  • Knowledge of and adept at using modern office practices, computer equipment, and software applications related to assignments, including Microsoft Office products (Word and Excel), appropriate safety precautions, procedures, practices, and regulations.
  • Ability to demonstrate effective communication skills, manage multiple projects, and have strong training and interpersonal skills. Exhibit positivity, passion for the safety of others, integrity, and accountability.
  • Associate's degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Safety and Health, Safety or Environmental Management, and Safety or Environmental Science.
  • At least three years of experience assisting and supporting the development, implementation, training, administration, and evaluation of occupational health, safety, and loss control programs.
  • Or a combination of education and experience described above.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Safety and Health, Safety or Environmental Management, and Safety or Environmental Science.
  • Five or more years of experience, OSHA 501 General Industry Certification, and CPR/AED/First Aid Certified.

Special Requirements:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license consistent with Service Authority policy requirements.
  • Ability to work on-call as needed.
