REPORTS TO:
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  • have earned a minimum of a bachelor’s degree,
  • have at least one year of successful experience working with students,
  • have completed most the master’s level courses in School Counseling, or accepted equivalent
  • is preparing for, working in, or completed counseling internship/field experience,
  • have a favorable reference or recommendation from a college/university supervisor,
  • have authorization from a college/university supervisor (if applicable), and
  • have met all the requirements to be eligible for employment in PWCS.

  • This job description is a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by incumbents of this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description. Additionally, the scope of this job may change as necessary by the school division.
  • This is a one (1) year position for the 2022-2023 school year. The pay is $210 per day. The CPOTA will receive a 195-day contract for 7 hours per day. This position is exempt and ineligible for overtime according to the Fair Labor Standards Act.
  • The position does have full benefits to include health insurance, Group Life, sick leave, personal leave, and investment in the Virginia Retirement System (VRS).
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES/ILLUSTRATIVE EX OF WORK:
  • Adheres to county and school disciplinary procedures
  • Plans, organizes, and delivers a comprehensive school counseling program based upon the Standards for School Counseling Programs in Prince William County Public Schools, the Standards for School Counseling Programs in Virginia Public Schools, and the American School Counselor Association Standards
  • Works within the beliefs, philosophy, and mission statements that have been developed by the school counseling department to align with the school and School Division’s mission statements
  • Applies legal and ethical standards of the professional school counselor
  • Advocates for the elimination of barriers to access and assure a rigorous curriculum for all students
  • Assists students in defining individual goals reflecting their interests, skills, aptitudes, and work values
  • Delivers counseling services through classroom instruction, group activities, individual or small group appraisal and advisement, consultation, individual and small group counseling, and peer facilitation
  • Monitors each student’s yearly progress toward successful completion of all academic or graduation requirements
  • Assists students in acquiring the academic preparation essential to select from a variety of educational and employment options upon completion of school
  • Improves students’ study skills and test-taking skills, enhances students’ self-concept development, strengthens students’ decision-making and goal setting skills, and develops students’ coping skills through utilization of the Prince William County Public School’s K-12 school counseling curriculum resources
  • Utilizes and interprets the student educational records according to local, state, and federal guidelines
  • Maintains accurate student information per Prince William County Public Schools’ regulations
  • Consults with parents, staff, helping professionals, and community agencies regarding student progress, as appropriate per confidentiality requirements
  • Plans student and parent programs that encourage the academic skills, social-emotional skills, and college/career readiness of all students
  • Collects and utilizes data to link the school counseling program to students’ academic success
  • Develops, in consultation with the school’s administrators and/or director of school counseling, data-driven action plans that align with school and school counseling program goals, impacts closing the gap issues, and allows effective monitoring of student’s progress
  • Provides regular result reports to administrators, teachers, and appropriate educational partners
  • Monitors impact issues such as academic achievement, discipline referrals, and attendance and assists with and supports appropriate interventions
