Department Description

POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Instructional Supervisor for Elementary Reading/English Language Arts (RELA) in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, the Elementary Literacy Support Teacher will combine teaching small intervention groups to children in assigned schools/centers and provide system-wide elementary literacy expertise to teachers and other staff. The incumbent of this position is required to travel to one or more school sites daily.

Hourly Range: $55,079 - $123,266

Detailed Description

DUTIES &RESPONSIBILITIES:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
  • Provides high quality instruction to small intervention groups at least 3 days per week in assigned school;
  • Utilizes identified research-based interventions focused specifically on students' needs;
  • Maintains up-to-date and accurate records on each student, including documentation of continuous monitoring of student performance and progress;
  • Collaborates with teachers, administration and families to help identify best practices;
  • Provides diagnostic assessments for students, as needed;
  • Participates daily as part of the PGCPS Elementary Literacy Support Team. The primary duties of the team will be to support teachers in research-based balanced literacy instruction in the following ways:
  • Works with support staff, educators and school administrators to facilitate the coordination of the school's reading program;
  • Provides literacy modules on research-based practices for K-5 teachers throughout PGCPS;
  • Coaches, debriefs, demonstrates daily, and provides on-site assistance to teachers in implementing balanced literacy techniques;
  • Demonstrates a thorough understanding of the RELA curriculum by planning lessons with the teacher; and
  • Trains educators on administering and analyzing elementary literacy assessments, helps educators apply the data to instruction, and analyzes lessons taught.

  • Works under the direction of the Elementary Reading/English Language Arts Office to create curriculum, analyze data, and develop, support and monitor best practices in literacy;
  • Participates in ongoing professional development on coaching and classroom applications of elementary literacy practices;
  • Provides appropriate ongoing documentation of completion of job responsibilities; submits required forms and communications electronically; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Job Requirements

    QUALIFICATIONS:
    The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
  • Excellent communication skills with adults and students;
  • Excellent coaching and professional development skills;
  • Effective demonstrable knowledge of science of reading and research-based literacy practices applied to the K-5 classroom;
  • Strong initiative and leadership skills;
  • Ability to administer, monitor, analyze and use elementary literacy data; and
  • Broad knowledge of computer skills, to include but not limited to the Microsoft suite; Google applications and Zoom/online meeting tools.
  • EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
    Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required; Master's degree preferred. A minimum of five (5) years of elementary classroom experience and completion of Language Essentials for the Teaching of Reading and Spelling and/or a series of other professional development based on the science of reading research and/or structured literacy required.
    CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
    Holds or is eligible for a Maryland Standard Professional Certificate in reading required; Advanced Professional Certificate preferred.
    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
    No direct supervisory responsibilities.
