Summary: Under the direction of the Director of Student Services the Student Support Specialist provides direct and indirect support services to students experiencing social, emotional and/or behavioral problems that interfere with their performance and/or attendance in school, and facilitates communication among school, home, and community providers.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Maintains a knowledge of state, local, and School Board policies on attendance.
- Gather and assess attendance from schools.
- Monitor occurrences of extreme absenteeism, unexcused absences, and excessive tardiness.
- Locate students that are habitually missing from school.
- Serves on both school-based and system-wide committees to address attendance issues.
- Provides outreach and information to parents, including those experiencing homelessness, connecting them with community resources.
- Determine the underlying cause of ongoing absences.
- Maintains appropriate school records and provides written reports and communications in chronic absenteeism, truancy, homelessness, foster care, and medical billing.
- Works to support students with discipline referrals, attendance, and truancy concerns.
- Attends staff meetings, in-services, and workshops, as assigned.
- Meet with parents and students who discuss attendance issues.
- File petitions with Juvenile Court Services Unit when needed and attend truancy hearings.
- Ensure compliance with compulsory attendance laws.
- Write and submit case reports on investigation findings and resolutions.
- Assists parents in understanding programs and objectives of the school and enhancing involvement in the education of their children.
- Report issues of concern to child services or law enforcement.
- Collaborates with school staff and other school system personnel in implementing strategies to promote student learning.
- Make home visits as needed.
- All other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCECandidate must be a graduate of an accredited college or university and possess a bachelor’s degree.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIESDecision-making skills are an important aspect of this position. Knowledge of special education laws and regulations is required. Must be able to demonstrate the ability to function effectively as a team member. Frequent operation of office equipment is required. Must be able to attend school-related functions, visit the homes of students, community agencies, and schools throughout the division. Candidate must possess good moral character.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONSPreferred license: social worker, school social worker, behavior analyst, or other health or behavioral license
PHYSICAL DEMANDSFrequent walking, stooping, standing, lifting, up to approximately 30 pounds, and occasional lifting of equipment and/or materials weighing up to approximately 40 pounds may be required. Other limited physical activities are required. Travel to schools throughout the division and central office is required. Frequent operation of a vehicle and office equipment is required. Regular and frequent contact made at all levels to develop and achieve organizational goals and missions. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word level; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data. Regular contact with students with special needs is required. Contact with other staff members, community agencies, and parents is required. Frequent contact with parents by telephone and in person may be necessary.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENTTen-month employment. Salary will be determined by the current salary schedule.
EVALUATIONPerformance of the position will be evaluated annually in accordance with the provisions of the Prince Edward County School Board’s policy on evaluation of professional personnel.
