Job Description

The Lead Pre-Op/PACU Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible and accountable for the patient flow and along with the D.O.N. scheduling assignments for each day. This personnel serves as a clinical resource for the physicians and staff. 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates appropriate critical thinking and decision making abilities. 
  • Oversees the delivery of patient care to the patients in Pre-Operative and PACU; directs and delegates patient care assignments to Pre-Operative /PACU staff based on acuteness of patient care needs, age of patient, staff skill level and availability along with the D.O.N. 
  • Maintains and utilizes established policies and procedures and serves as a resource to staff regarding them. Maintains these policies, procedures and Service standards that include confidentiality, Q/A programs, risk management/safety, and infection control. Monitors & reports any issues related to environment of care standards. 
  • Communicates with all departments to identify potential problems and coordinate patient care. Consults with interdisciplinary team members as required and adjusts patient care as indicated to provide optimal care. 
  • Provides a department orientation program for all new employees. Continues to assess all staff to be sure their skills and competencies are maintained to assure positive patient outcomes.
  • Monitors and provides feedback to staff to promote continual readiness for regulatory surveys. 
  • Monitors supplies and equipment to ensure adequate availability for staff and physicians. Places pharmaceutical orders as needed. Maintains unit based logs (i.e. AED, refrigerator/warmer temps) and all other reports as outlined in the facility policy & procedures. 
  • Fosters collaborative working relationships with physicians and other health care team members. Timely response to & reporting of any real or potential patient/family/staff/physician issues to D.O.N and/or R.D.N. This includes timely completion, research & follow up on incident/variance reports. 
  • Serves as a clinical resource for the department regarding patient care and clinical documentation in accordance with standards of practice. Enforces the department staff to validate that all appropriate paperwork is completed (consents, current H&P) during admission. Monitors & ensures accurate recording of medical records. 
  • Creates a positive atmosphere and serves as a role model for positive interactions with patients/families/staff in accordance with department specific patient satisfaction action plans. Performs all other job assignments as required. 
  • Participate in Quality Assurance Performance Improvement Committee (QAPI).
  • Performs other duties as requested by management.
  • Travels to facilities on need be basis.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Team facilitation and meeting skills
  • Ability to provide effective conflict resolution 
  • Ability to provide good working report with co-workers, managers, patients, visitors, vendors, families and physicians
  • Ability to promote a positive facility image with physicians, patients, visitors, vendors and the general public
  • Ability to follow direction and corporate policy and procedures

Requirements:

  • Two years professional experience in a surgical facility or ASC (required)
  • Current nursing license in good standing with the State licensing board (required) 
  • Critical care or Pre-Operative/PACU experience (required)
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (preferred)
  • One year experience in a supervisory or lead capacity (preferred) 
  • PALS certified, as appropriate to the facility
  • ACLS and BLS certification
