General Purpose of Position:

The Assistant Sports Performance Specialist, who will have the working title of Strength and Conditioning – Assistant Coach on campus, oversees program design and implementation for assigned teams. This position assists with additional assigned administrative tasks within the sports performance department. Collaborating with head coaches and the sports medicine team, they organize and implement strength, power, speed, and agility programs. Consistent with departmental philosophy, they are responsible for developing and administering a sound strength and conditioning program, including teaching safe lifting techniques and movement strategies, supervising weight room and conditioning sessions, and implementing holistic resources within allocated teams.

Reporting to the Performance Director of Ignition APG, with day-to-day operations oversight by the Assistant Athletic Director for Strength and Conditioning, this role is pivotal in managing a successful NCAA Division I strength and conditioning program while supporting academic achievement and student-athlete welfare. This position requires maintaining compliance with all NCAA, University, and Conference practices and regulations, while contributing to the continual growth of the department. Primary Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions):


Duties/Responsibilities

Provides training to student athletes, while representing Ignition APG

Ability to assist in ad hoc Ignition APG projects.

Ensure the establishment and consistent adherence to safety measures and emergency procedures within the strength and conditioning program.

Develop comprehensive training programs for teams and individuals based on sport specificity, seasonality, competitive strategy, progressive instruction, acclimation, and injury rehabilitation programming and instruction.

Conduct thorough and relevant physical assessments as part of the strength and conditioning program.

Oversee team and individual monitoring efforts within the department.

Provide high-quality and effective coaching to student-athletes during both in-season and off-season periods within the strength and conditioning program.

Customize the strength and conditioning program to address the personal athletic goals and needs of individual student-athletes.

Emphasize the development of life skills and competencies beyond athletic performance within the strength and conditioning program.

Collaborate effectively with other departments to ensure student-athlete needs are central to all training decisions within the strength and conditioning program.

Foster productive collaboration with the Sports Medicine Department to contribute to the overall well-being of student-athletes and to ensure the progressive rehabilitation of student-athletes, including proper reporting of injuries to medical staff and appropriate accommodation within the student-athletes' strength and conditioning program.

Maintain accessibility for consultations and assistance to student-athletes.

Ensure the implementation of a program that results in noticeable improvement in athletic performance over time for student-athletes while actively enhancing their awareness and understanding of their development and status.

Offer support to student-athletes during various activities, including practices, games, department events, and team functions within and outside the strength and conditioning program.

Adhere to and enforce all policies and procedures of the department and the University.

Maintain a current knowledge base of advances in weight training, cardiovascular conditioning, and training.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Individual must possess knowledge in the areas of strength and conditioning and exercise physiology
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as percentages and volume
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables and situations
  • Strong computer skills (proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite)
  • Ability to work with the public using tact and judgement
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to operate work-related equipment; and effectively communicate verbally with administration, student-athletes, coaches, and employees of the University

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required (Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Physical Education, or related field)
  • Master’s Degree in Kinesiology, Sports Science, Rehabilitation, or related field desired
  • Currently holds a national accredited certification such CSCS (NSCA) or SCCC (CSCCA)
  • Minimum one- or two-years’ experience in strength and conditioning
  • CPR/AED Certification Required or ability to obtain prior to employment
  • Must be able to work independently with little daily supervision
  • Excellent presentation skills in both small and large group settings
  • Experience and demonstrated ability in Athlete Monitoring (GPS, IMA, Heart Rate/HRV, force plates, etc.)
  • Experience and demonstrated ability in Athlete Management Systems (AMS) (TeamBuildr, Teamworks, Bridge etc.)

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 100 lbs. Some manual labor is required.
  • Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period.
  • Ability to stand and/or walk for extended periods of time.
  • Possible outdoor work in all types of weather.
  • Standard office/weight room environment.
  • Unexpected interruptions occur often, and stress level is moderate to high.
  • Noise level is moderate to loud.
