Summary:
Prairie Island Indian Community (PIIC) is seeking interns for various departments for Summer 2024 beginning in May or June. Our internship opportunities provide students with on-the-job training and experience while making important contributions to the Community. Specific duties for each intern may vary and are intended to provide a well-rounded perspective to satisfy internship requirements. Applicants must be enrolled in a 2 or 4-year degree post-secondary program.
Job Responsibilities & Duties:
The ideal candidate for the Environmental Tribal Intern position will have a demonstrated interest in the outdoors, be enrolled in associate or bachelor's degree in an environmental field (agro-ecology, biology, hydrology, environmental studies, natural resources, or similar) and have experience with field equipment operation and upkeep (including garden implements, chainsaws, 4-wheelers, UTVs, etc.).
The following duties and responsibilities are not meant to be all-inclusive and may be adjusted to meet business needs.
The Environmental Tribal Intern will assist the Land & Environment staff in conducting field work to improve the natural resources used by the Tribal membership for food, medicine, and cultural connection.
– Assist in implementing food sovereignty initiatives such as maintaining Community Vegetable Garden and Cultural & Medicinal Garden programs, and Tiyokȟata (greenhouse) operations.
– Implement “invasive” plant species control
– Assist in monitoring wildlife nest structures and survey efforts
– Implement pollinator habitat and cultural plantings and restoration maintenance
– Support in organizing and facilitating education/outreach events
– Assist in water quality and biological sample collection from area lakes, rivers, wetlands, and land– Assist with other projects/tasks as needed within the department
