The Potsdam Humane Society operates a not-for-profit animal shelter, which provides care and protection to animals in need, including the returning of lost pets to their homes, giving proper medical attention and/or arranging for their quality adoption after spaying and neutering. The Potsdam Humane Society aspires to be a shelter where an adoptable animal will never lose its life due to lack of space or cost of care, to educate the public regarding New York State animal cruelty laws and the humane treatment of animals emphasizing the importance of spaying and neutering, and to decrease the numbers of those unwanted and abandoned.
GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION:
Licensed Veterinary Technicians are responsible for daily medications, treatments. and testing. They conduct physical exams, behavior assessments, and monitor all animals for symptoms of illness. They assist with pre- and post-op surgical care and anesthesia. LVTs are responsible for maintaining electronic and paper files, answering phones, assisting with intake and adoptions, socializing animals, and assisting to maintain a hygienic environment. This position requires attention to detail, the ability to think on your feet, and good animal handling skills. The incumbent shall have the ability to multi-task and prioritize duties.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
MEDICAL
· Administer medications
· Daily treatments (vaccines and preventatives)
· Physical exams
· Fecal exams
SURGICAL
· Prepare tech and surgery room for surgery
· Prepare surgical packs
· Pre- and post-operative animal care
ADMINISTRATIVE
· Enter all medical and treatment information in database and animal files
· Check all animal records for accuracy and completeness
INTAKE & INTERNAL TRANSFER
· Check Isolation for new animals; check for microchip; post on social media if no known owner
· Perform behavioral assessments
· Move out animals that are ready for adoption
· Call in animals when there is space available
· Assist with adoption processing and counseling, including completing and submitting licenses for Town of Potsdam
QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE JOB:
Education: Graduate of an accredited Veterinary Technology program with a current New York State license as a Veterinary Technician.
Experience: Prefer at least 1 year of experience as a practicing Licensed Veterinary Technician, but new graduates welcome to apply.
Other: Strong animal handling and customer service skills. Ability to lift at least 50 pounds.
