JOB SUMMARY: Performs Pharmacist's tasks and provides pharmacy oversight as needed at PIHC Pharmacy Decatur and Duluth locations. Pharmacists will review and interpret medication orders, provide counseling on medications and potential side effects and interactions to patients as deemed appropriate, provide oversight and management of pharmacy personnel. This position will be responsible for ensuring pharmacy compliance with federal rules and regulations as well as upholding the current established practices for our 340B program to ensure accurate processing of prescription claims while maintaining the integrity of our 340B program while staffing.

Requirements

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Accurately reviews and interprets medication orders; prepares accurate and complete patient profile
  • Reviews profiles for correct drug, dosage and route of administration
  • Clinically reviews potential drug duplication, drug-drug interaction, drug allergy to medication prescribed
  • Efficiently and accurately performs other professional pharmacy duties including the safe procurement, preparation, labeling, distribution and control of all drugs
  • Counsels patients and answers their questions regarding usage of medicine, side effects, interactions, contraindications, therapeutic alternatives, over-the-counter products, and refers to medical providers as needed to ensure medication is taken correctly, health needs are addressed, and satisfaction with service
  • Ensures the pharmacy operates in accordance to regulations, company policies and standards. Assists pharmacy leadership with establishing procedures that promote the efficient workflow of the pharmacy including assigning roles, coordinating activities, engaging in continuous quality improvement processes

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Interprets, clarifies and transcribes all medication orders accurately and timely.
  • Documents medication order clarifications.
  • Monitors medication orders and reviews patient profile to ensure appropriate drug selection and dosage documents recommendations.
  • Completes pharmacy operational requirements by organizing and directing technicians' work flow; verifying their preparation and labeling of pharmaceuticals and verifying order entries
  • Performs or oversees the performance of measuring, compounding and storing of medications used in patient care.
  • Complies with state and federal drug laws as regulated by the state Board of Pharmacy and the Drug Enforcement Administration by maintaining records for controlled substances; removing outdated and damaged drugs from pharmacy inventory; supervising the work results of support personnel; maintaining current registration; studying existing and new legislation; anticipating legislation; advising management on needed actions and transferring prescriptions.
  • Inventories, orders, and maintains supply of drugs, chemicals, and other pharmaceutical stock.
  • Advises patients and care providers of potential drug interactions, possible side effects, storage information, and instructions on how to use medications.
  • Trains and supervises pharmacy technicians as assigned.
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of pharmacy’s policies and procedures.
  • Dispenses controlled medications and maintains records as required by appropriate regulatory authorities.
  • Demonstrates ability to function as a team member in performance improvement review activities.
  • Demonstrates ability to set priorities, work independently and cooperatively with others internally and externally.
  • Maintains competence required for current job position and demonstrates knowledge in the following areas a. safety b. pharmacy security c. medication safety d. disease specific e. patient confidentiality f. hazardous substances g. disaster/fire/emergency h. medication errors.
  • Maintains competencies and certifications necessary for administering injections.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by appropriate management.
  • Operates cash registers to accept payment from customers.
  • Receives and store incoming supplies, verify quantities against invoices, and inform supervisors of stock needs and shortages.
  • Understands and assists Pharmacist In Charge with all aspects of 340B program management, implementation, processes, auditing and training.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS Pharmacy Degree or a Doctor Pharmacy Degree
  • Active Pharmacist License - Georgia
  • Minimum 2 years of pharmacy experience including knowledge of current health care pharmacy practices; or any combination of education and experience, which provide an equivalent the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
