Job DescriptionJOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE: ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL REPORTS TO: PRINCIPAL
OVER-TIME STATUS: EXEMPT PAY GRADE: 250
JOB SUMMARY:Performs difficult professional and responsible administrative work assisting the principal in the
coordination, supervision and management of the total school program and operation. As part
of the administrative team, the assistant principal provides leadership in activities and programs
as necessary; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision
of the Principal.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  • Performs a variety of administrative duties in compliance with school division policies and legal requirements required to assist with the management of assigned human, material, and financial resources necessary for school operation;
  • Upholds effective discipline and fosters a safe and positive environment for students and staff;
  • Shows evidence of instructional leadership and assists with the delivery of required programs or curricular areas necessary to achieve excellence and continuous improvement consistent with school division goals;
  • Participates in collaborative development and implementation of school improvement plans;
  • Plans, implements, supports, and assesses instructional programs;
  • Participates in the provision of staff development programs consistent with program evaluation results and school instructional improvement plans;
  • Identifies, analyzes, and resolves problems using effective problem solving techniques;
  • Promotes effective communication and interpersonal relations with students, staff, parents, and other community members;
  • Works collaboratively with staff, families, and community members to secure resources and to support the success of a diverse student population; models professional, moral, and ethical standards as well as personal integrity in all interactions;
  • Works in a collegial and collaborative manner with other administrators, school personnel, and the community to promote and support the mission and goals of the school division;
  • Participates in professional development activities to enhance student learning and provide service to the profession, the division, and the community.
  • Conducts meetings with parents, students and teachers;
  • Enforces standards of discipline, health, safety and general welfare for students;
  • Assists in the preparation of reports, the maintenance of inventories and the distribution of materials, books and equipment;
  • Serves as acting principal in the absence of the principal;
  • Serves on division? wide, regional and State committees as necessary;
  • Attends after school meetings and activities as required;
  • Performs related tasks as deemed necessary.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:Thorough knowledge of the practices, methods and techniques used in the administration and
supervision of all programs at the middle school; strong oral and written communication skills;
outstanding leadership and personal characteristics; a high degree of ability to motivate others;
a high degree of stamina.
This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10
pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work
requires standing, walking, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for
expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive
information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing
written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing
general surroundings and activities.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Postgraduate Professional
License with an endorsement in Administration and Supervision in Virginia and considerable
teaching experience.
