Portland Public Schools is Hiring a Co-Curricular Director 1.0 FTE Full Time Near Portland, ME

Portland High School is home to the Bulldogs, located in the heart of the city of Portland, Maine. Our students hail from over 40 birth countries and speak over 25 different languages; enrollment for the 2024/2025 school year is 925. Our diverse student body participates solidly in school activities and our teams and clubs are often well positioned for post-season play. Students at PHS excel in the classroom and on the stage, fields and floors of our city. “The city is our campus” is a motto we live - and the playing fields of our students include Fitzpatrick Stadium and Hadlock Field, the Expo and Deering Oaks Park. We have long standing relationships with the Maine Celtics and the Seadogs.
Portland High School is seeking a person to fill the role of Co-Curricular Director. The successful candidate must have boundless energy and enthusiasm for high school age students and student events, possess strong written and verbal communication, be organized, collaborative, a team player, a good listener and strong advocate for the involvement of ALL students in activities and athletics. ResponsibilitiesThe Co-Curricular Director is a member of the building Administrative Team and is involved in overall school supervision and planning with the building administrators. The Director manages and organizes all co-curricular activities in the building including clubs, intramurals and athletic teams. Other job responsibilities include:
  • Develops, oversees and manages the budget for all athletics and activities.
  • Supervises, evaluates, and hires all coaches and advisors.
  • Administers all regulations of the Maine Principals Association (MPA) and Southern Maine Activities Association (SMAA) including student eligibility, all paperwork and permissions, policies and practices with the co-curricular department.
  • Collaborates and coordinates with the City Rec department and other City staff for field time, practice time and space availability.
  • Works with the athletic Booster organization.
  • Manages compliance with Title IX laws and regulations.
  • Oversees transportation for athletic events and field trips.
  • Attends local, district, state and league meetings - representing Portland High School.
  • Organizes events including Open Houses, meet the coaches, and other award events.
  • Understands and knows laws and regulations guiding work in schools including district policies.
  • The successful candidate must have the ability to use, navigate and learn several technology platforms in use by the district and the league.
  • Collaborates and coordinates with the all SMAA league Co-Curricular Directors.
Skills And AbilitiesLeadership: Evidence of leadership skills necessary to create a supportive learning environment for staff, students and coaches and students. and to promote the development of the instructional staff. Management experience in education or business.Human Relations: Customer and performance oriented, effective in team-based organization and outcome focused, strong commitment to educational excellence, willingness to be involved in community activities. Technology: Strong computer skills. Demonstrated ability to use technology in support of work deliverables including scheduling and budget management.
