The Opportunity
Portland Public Schools is seeking a talented school leader with experience in leading an increasingly diverse school. The successful candidate will demonstrate leadership practices that support collaboration, data-driven decision making, family and community engagement, innovation, and teamwork-oriented approaches, with a racial equity and equality-focused lens. The successful candidate will also demonstrate an awareness of the intersectional identities multilingual learners possess and the historical inequities they have experienced. The principal at Rigler Elementary School will continue to establish a learning environment that promotes academic excellence and the personal growth of every student and staff member. This school principal position is under the supervision of the Office of School Performance and is supervised by the assigned Senior Director of Schools.
School Description
Rigler Elementary School serves 260 students in NE Portland in the wonderfully diverse community of the Cully neighborhood. Rigler boasts a robust Spanish Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program that has thrived and grown over the last 17 years. This is PPS’ only full Spanish DLI school in the district, leveraging the power of students’ native language and culture to enhance achievement and belonging. Both Spanish and English speaking students, families, and teachers find a welcoming school home at Rigler.
The school enjoys strong advocacy and support from the community as well as talented and committed staff members. Staff are focused on data driven instruction and using professional learning communities (PLC) to meet students’ academic needs. Rigler has a long history of restorative practice, and strives to model antiracist methods of teaching, learning, and leadership in all aspects of schooling. Staff are also trained in mindful and trauma informed practices.
Principal Responsibilities
A school Principal provides educational and instructional leadership to the students, staff, community, and stakeholders served by the Portland Public Schools. Principals may be assigned to Elementary, Middle, PK-8, High, or other schools under the jurisdiction of the district and through articulated and measurable Educational Leadership Standards. The school principal is a strong leader with high ethical standards who understands and models culturally responsive leadership competencies. The principal is a highly skilled communicator who creates connections and maintains effective working relationships with students, parents, administrators, staff, community members, and the public.

This position is classified as Principal K-12, on the Licensed (Certified) Administrator Salary Schedule (for 233 days) FLSA Exempt.

PPS utilizes a pool process for Principal applications. Applicants who are successful through the screening process will receive an invitation to an in-person district interview, which will consist of various activities. Applicants who are successful at the district interview stage may be part of the finalist pool that participates in school-based openings as they become available. All finalists will interview with the Superintendent, who has the final decision.
Principals requesting a different work assignment DO NOT have to go through the screening process but will need to apply to the Principal posting. (Assistant or Vice-Principals interested in a Principal Role will need to complete our screening process and apply to the Principal posting).
