    SOCIAL STUDIES, GRADES 9-12
Deering is hiring a one year only Social Studies teacher to join our team for the remainder of the 2023-24 school year. We are a comprehensive public high school serving about 800 students. As the most diverse school in Maine, we are committed to disrupting inequities in our community by creating a joyful place of learning designed to ensure that every student succeeds.
We are seeking a teacher with a demonstrated commitment to equitable teaching practices, a willingness to collaborate closely with others, and the ability to teach to high standards in a heterogeneous classroom. We can specify the anticipated courseload to be one section of Psychology and two sections of Government, Law, and Politics.
As part of Portland Public Schools, Deering promotes district goals as outlined in the Portland Promise, and is guided by our district’s Instructional Vision, which prioritizes inclusive classroom environments, active learning, high expectations, culturally responsive teaching, an assets-based approach, collaboration, and assessments for learning.
    Responsibilities include:
    • Implementing state learning standards and Deering curricula and assessments to give all students access to rigorous and engaging grade-level work.
    • Working collaboratively with colleagues to improve student outcomes through analysis of student work, adjustments in instruction, and shared teaching strategies.
    • Managing behavior in a way that aligns to school-wide expectations and protocols, and is clear, consistent, equitable, and student-centered.
    • Establishing and maintaining a cooperative working relationship with students and families based on trust, understanding and respect for the communities in which they identify.
Minimum Qualification Standards (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities):
    • Knowledge of PPS curriculum, techniques for integrating curriculum, PPS policies, and effective instructional practices.
    • Experience with proficiency-based grading, including developing high-quality assessments aligned to student-friendly rubrics.
    • Demonstrated willingness to collaborate with colleagues, including ELL and Special Ed teachers, to design effective lessons and assessments.
    • Ability to teach with cultural humility, through questioning deeply held beliefs and viewpoints, grappling with conflicting perspectives, considering contextualization and causation, developing a sense of chronology, and engaging in decolonization.
    • Willingness and ability to use technology to teach and communicate with students and families.
    • Ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office and school based staff, students, parents and community.
    • Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills.
    EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's degree in the applicable field of education from an accredited college or university. Master Degree preferred.
