Portland General Electric is Hiring a Wind turbine technician Near Rufus, OR

Key Responsibilities

Wind Turbine Operation and Maintenance :

Performs routine preventive maintenance in accordance with OEM maintenance manuals and technical bulletins with periodic review by senior technicians.

Performs routine corrective maintenance of mechanical, electrical and electronic component repair or replacement of parts while following OEM requirements with periodic review by senior technicians.

Prepares procedural documentation associated with turbine operations and maintenance for review by senior technicians. Participates in QA / QC inspections while turbines are under Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) warranty and maintenance contract.

Balance of Plant Operations and Maintenance :

Operates and performs preventative maintenance on low-, medium- and high- voltage equipment with periodic review by senior technicians.

Follows approved switching order, performs high voltage switching and installs safety grounds. Maintains function and operation of support facilities including office spaces, warehouses, control and communication areas, heating and cooling systems, electrical power, plumbing, etc.

Follows PGE and Plant safety and environmental policies, instructions and guidelines.

Teamwork :

Functions within a team to safely, cost effectively and quickly resolve issues. May assist less experienced colleagues by answering procedural questions and resolving routine problems and issues.

Education / Experience / Certifications :

Education : Requires a high school diploma or equivalent; training from an accredited school, other than correspondence or on-line, in a technical hard science (engineering, physics, power or closely related) preferred.

Experience : Typically, two or more years in operations and / or maintenance of electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, or pneumatic systems.

A current journeyman or master electrician license may substitute for two years of experience. A wind technician certificate program can substitute for one year of experience.

Electrical training with journeyman or apprentice level skills or equivalent experience preferred. Senior level Technicians typically have 5 or more years of experience and experience in power plant or wind farm operations, familiarity with or experience with Vestas and Siemens platforms.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities :

Functional Competencies :

  • Intermediate ability to interpret and follow a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
  • Basic knowledge of industry compliance and standards such as OSHA, NERC, FERC, NEC, NESC, NFPA 70, etc.
  • Basic technical writing skills utilized for developing procedures and training documentation.
  • Intermediate knowledge and skill with electronic testing equipment. (i.e., voltage tester, amp clamp, oscilloscope, infrared camera, hydraulic torque and tension, alignment and other various hand and power tools).
  • Working knowledge of turbine equipment, including safety regulations.
  • Working ability to troubleshoot, diagnose and correct failed or faulty equipment. Working ability to interpret schematics and drawings for electrical and hydraulic systems.
  • Working ability to troubleshoot and repair automated control systems, instrumentation and SCADA systems.
  • Working ability to think clearly and maintain composure during stressful or dangerous situations.
  • Working ability to interpret and follow directions, procedures and instructions
  • Working skills in data entry and use of MS Office applications to communicate and perform tasks.

Physical Capabilities :

  • This position requires a valid driver’s license and a history of safe driving practices.
  • Able to pass wind physical evaluation and to climb 80 meters (300 ft) steel towers daily basis to perform maintenance in the nacelle and hub.
  • Weight must not exceed 265lbs (excluding equipment / gear) when performing job related tasks, dictated by ladder and fall protection equipment ratings.

Determined by equipment and PPE weight limitations.

  • Daily driving / travel / commute within service territory - Frequently
  • Occasional overnight driving / travel / commuting inside / outside the service territory
  • Computer use (use computer regularly for entire work shift)
  • Lifting / pushing / pulling / carrying : More than 50 lbs.
  • Moving on unstable surfaces requiring balance, including : Elevated areas (i.e., catwalks, roofs and high buildings)Confined spacesWalking distances and surfaces (long distances and over rough, uneven or rocky surfaces)Stairs (over 10 steps)Ladders (over 10 rungs)Must be able to climb wind turbines which can be 250 feet or more.

Compensation Range : $26.15 - $48.86

$26.15 - $48.86

Actual total compensation, including a performance based incentive bonus, is commensurate with experience, skills, qualifications, education, training, and internal equity.

While we anticipate the selected candidate for this position will fall towards the middle or entry point of the compensation range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis.
